Description

Gold Coast | Genuine flexibility and hybrid working | Part-time considered

McTaggart Grant Lawyers is looking for an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer to join our growing team on the Gold Coast.

This is an opportunity to do genuinely sophisticated corporate and commercial work, with direct access to experienced Principals, without feeling that a senior legal career has to come at the expense of flexibility or life outside work.

We are open to structuring the role around the right person. That includes full-time or part-time arrangements and genuine hybrid working.

McTaggart Grant Lawyers is a modern, highly regarded boutique firm recognised by Doyle’s Guide for its work in corporate, commercial and property law. We act for a strong client base on the Gold Coast and throughout Australia and regularly receive complex, high-value and capital city-quality instructions.

Our corporate and commercial practice continues to grow and we are looking for a Senior Associate to join the team and work directly with, and report to, our Corporate and Commercial Principal. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of high-quality work, develop strong client relationships and continue building your technical and commercial capability with close support and mentoring.

What the role offers

You will report directly to our Corporate and Commercial Principal, an Accredited Specialist in Business Law with significant top-tier and transactional experience. At this level, we want you to have real autonomy and ownership of your matters. Equally, you will have ready access to an experienced senior lawyer when you want to discuss strategy, work through a difficult issue or develop your skills in an unfamiliar area.

The role offers:

  • High-quality corporate and commercial work without the need to commute to a capital city.
  • Direct access to and mentoring from our Corporate and Commercial Principal, including involvement in complex transactions and strategic client matters.
  • The opportunity to continue developing your technical, transactional, drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Autonomy to run your own matters, with senior support readily available when you need it.
  • Exposure to the commercial and strategic aspects of running transactions and managing client relationships, not simply discrete drafting tasks.
  • Opportunities to mentor junior lawyers, graduates and clerks and develop your own leadership skills.
  • The ability to build deeper client relationships and participate in business development in a way that suits your strengths and career goals.
  • A genuine opportunity to contribute to the continued development of a growing corporate and commercial practice.

Flexibility that is actually flexible

We recognise that experienced lawyers increasingly want successful careers that work around their lives, rather than the other way around. For the right candidate, we are genuinely open to discussing:

  • hybrid working arrangements;
  • flexibility around how your working week is structured;
  • part-time employment; and
  • other practical arrangements that allow you to perform at a high level while maintaining commitments outside work.

We are interested in finding the right long-term person for the practice and are willing to have a sensible conversation about what arrangement works for both you and the firm.

Learning, mentoring and career development

You will work directly with our Corporate and Commercial Principal rather than through multiple layers of hierarchy, giving you regular access to an experienced senior practitioner for technical guidance, transaction strategy, drafting, negotiation and career development.

That means access to:

  • regular discussion and feedback on difficult legal and commercial issues;
  • hands-on mentoring on transaction strategy, drafting and negotiation;
  • exposure to complex and unusual matters;
  • support to broaden your corporate and commercial skillset;
  • opportunities to develop supervision and leadership skills through mentoring more junior lawyers;
  • increasing involvement in client relationships and the commercial development of the practice; and
  • meaningful input into the growth and development of the corporate and commercial team.

We want the person joining us to continue becoming a better lawyer, not simply produce more work.

About you

We expect you will have approximately 6+ years’ PQE in corporate and commercial law, although we are more interested in the quality and relevance of your experience than an exact number.

You will ideally have experience across a number of the following areas:

  • business, asset or share sale transactions;
  • commercial contract drafting and negotiation;
  • shareholder and corporate governance matters;
  • corporate structuring and restructures;
  • finance and security documentation;
  • the Corporations Act and PPSA; and
  • advising private businesses, business owners and other commercial clients.

You will also be:

  • a strong and practical commercial lawyer;
  • an excellent drafter and communicator;
  • comfortable taking responsibility for matters and dealing directly with clients;
  • commercially minded and able to see beyond the purely legal issue;
  • collaborative and comfortable working as part of a close-knit team;
  • interested in helping develop junior lawyers; and
  • interested in continuing to develop your own technical, commercial and leadership capability.

You do not need to tick every box. If you are an experienced commercial lawyer with a strong foundation and the appetite to develop further, we would still like to hear from you.

Why join McTaggart Grant Lawyers?

We offer the combination of sophisticated work, genuine responsibility and a working environment that can be difficult to find in larger firms.

Our benefits include:

  • genuine flexible and hybrid working arrangements;
  • part-time arrangements considered;
  • direct access to and mentoring from our Corporate and Commercial Principal;
  • high-quality corporate and commercial work;
  • a supportive and collaborative working environment;
  • meaningful mentoring and professional development;
  • autonomy and ownership appropriate to your level of experience;
  • opportunities to develop client relationships and leadership capability;
  • up to an additional week of loyalty leave each year after the qualifying period;
  • a paid day off for your birthday; and
  • a modern, relaxed office environment on the Gold Coast.

If you are an experienced corporate or commercial lawyer looking for high-quality work, genuine flexibility and the opportunity to continue developing in a senior role, we would be pleased to hear from you.
