Description

Lead great engineering. Build technology with purpose.

At Impact Curriculum, we’re using technology to help improve educational outcomes across Australia. As a purpose-driven, not-for-profit organisation, we support teachers with high-quality, evidence-informed curriculum resources and professional learning.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who combines strong technical capability with sound judgement, curiosity and a collaborative approach to technical leadership.

This is an opportunity to help shape and strengthen the technology behind our digital products while remaining close to hands-on engineering.

About the role

Working closely with our CTO and Technology Team, you’ll take technical ownership of complex engineering challenges, contribute to the evolution of our digital platforms and help build strong, sustainable engineering practices.

You’ll influence technical decisions, guide other engineers and work collaboratively across product and data to deliver technology that is scalable, secure, reliable and user-centred.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading the design and development of complex software applications, services and integrations.
  • Taking technical ownership of significant components of our digital platforms.
  • Making sound technical design and architecture decisions, balancing performance, scalability, security and maintainability.
  • Working with product and other stakeholders to translate complex requirements into effective solutions.
  • Strengthening engineering standards, automated testing, CI/CD and production reliability.
  • Identifying and addressing technical debt, system risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring and constructive code/design reviews.
  • Contributing to longer-term technology decisions and continuous improvement.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Substantial experience designing, building and supporting production software systems.
  • Advanced programming capability (Typescript, NodeJS, Go, Terraform) and experience with contemporary software frameworks and architectures.
  • Strong experience with APIs, integrations, databases and cloud-based environments.
  • Demonstrated capability in technical design, architecture and evaluating technical trade-offs.
  • Strong knowledge of automated testing, CI/CD, performance, security and system reliability.
  • Excellent analytical, debugging and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices.
  • The confidence to make sound technical decisions, communicate clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.

You’ll be comfortable working with ambiguity, taking ownership and finding practical solutions without unnecessarily adding complexity.

This is a technical leadership role, not a formal people-management position.
