Description

Hutt St Centre has supported people at risk of or experiencing homelessness for more than 70 years. Our vision is to end homelessness, and our mission is to advocate with and empower people as they rebuild their lives on their journey to homefulness.

We are looking for a Safety, Risk and Compliance Advisor who enjoys working with people, solving problems and finding better ways to do things. This newly created role reflects our commitment to keeping our people safe and strengthening how we manage risk and compliance.

Reporting to the General Manager People and Culture, you will work alongside managers, employees and volunteers to make safety, risk and compliance part of everyday practice. You will provide clear advice, improve systems and help teams turn recommendations into action.

About the role

Help shape a safer, more accountable Hutt St Centre by turning safety, risk and compliance requirements into practical action. Working alongside leaders, employees and volunteers, you will:

  • Strengthen our safety, risk and compliance systems, keeping policies, procedures and guidance current, accessible and relevant to the way we work.
  • Partner with managers to identify hazards, assess risks and put effective controls in place across our services, workplaces and volunteer activities.
  • Coordinate, and where appropriate lead, incident investigations, identifying root causes, sharing lessons and following corrective actions through to completion.
  • Work with leaders to prevent psychosocial harm, including risks associated with workload, fatigue, occupational violence, harmful behaviours and trauma exposure.
  • Build managers’ confidence and capability through coaching, advice, training and clear safety communications.
  • Support the WHS Committee and meaningful consultation with employees, volunteers and Health and Safety Representatives, encouraging people to speak up about hazards and near misses.
  • Keep risk registers, compliance calendars and action registers accurate and up to date, making priorities, responsibilities and overdue actions visible.
  • Turn data, employee feedback and audit findings into clear insights and recommendations for the Executive, WHS Committee and Board.

About you

You take a practical approach to safety and risk and enjoy helping people get things right. You can make complex requirements easy to understand, build trust across different teams and find solutions that work in busy environments. You bring sound judgement, reliable follow-through and the confidence to speak up when something needs attention.

You will bring:

  • Experience in WHS, with exposure to risk management, compliance or auditing.
  • A sound understanding of WHS requirements and how to apply them.
  • Experience with risk assessments, inspections, incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Good written communication skills, including preparing reports, procedures and guidance.
  • The ability to analyse information, identify issues and recommend workable solutions.
  • Strong organisation, accurate record keeping and reliable follow-through.
  • A relevant qualification in WHS, risk management or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.

Experience in community services, homelessness, health or a similar environment will be highly regarded.

You must have, or be willing to obtain, a satisfactory National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check. A current unrestricted driver’s licence and Australian work rights are also required.

You will share our commitment to treating people experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect.
