About the Role:

The Senior Cloud / DevOps Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, automation, and ongoing support of cloud environments used to deploy and operate client solutions.

The role works across cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, CI/CD, networking, identity, security, and application deployment, with a strong focus on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The position is accountable for delivering secure, scalable, repeatable, and supportable cloud solutions across the full lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, implementation, deployment, troubleshooting, and ongoing production support.

Key Responsibilities:

Cloud Infrastructure & Architecture

  • Design and implement cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Analyse client requirements, existing environments, networking, security, and operational constraints
  • Develop secure, maintainable, and repeatable solutions across compute, networking, Kubernetes, identity, storage, observability, and security
  • Identify and resolve infrastructure, connectivity, identity, and integration issues across complex client environments

Infrastructure as Code

  • Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools, primarily Terraform
  • Create reusable, version-controlled infrastructure modules and deployment configurations
  • Manage environment-specific configurations across development, test, and production environments
  • Review and improve existing Infrastructure as Code for reliability, maintainability, and consistency

Kubernetes & Application Deployment

  • Deploy and operate containerised applications using Kubernetes
  • Work with managed Kubernetes platforms including Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS)
  • Develop and maintain Helm charts and deployment configurations
  • Configure and troubleshoot Kubernetes networking, ingress, secrets, storage, identity, and workload permissions
  • Support upgrades, configuration changes, and lifecycle management of deployed workloads

CI/CD & Deployment Automation

  • Design, develop, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, primarily using Azure DevOps
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, application deployment, configuration, and validation
  • Integrate Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes, scripting, and cloud tooling into deployment workflows
  • Implement appropriate deployment controls, approvals, environment promotion, and release processes
  • Diagnose and resolve failures across automated deployment pipelines

Cloud Integration, Identity & Security

  • Integrate solutions with enterprise identity and access platforms
  • Configure and troubleshoot cloud networking, including virtual networks, VPCs, subnets, private connectivity, DNS, routing, firewalls, and load balancers
  • Work with Microsoft Entra ID, managed identities, AWS IAM roles, and workload identities
  • Integrate workloads with secrets management, container registries, logging, monitoring, and other shared cloud services
  • Work within client security, governance, and compliance requirements
  • Apply least-privilege access principles across cloud and Kubernetes environments

Operational Support & Troubleshooting

  • Investigate and resolve deployment, infrastructure, application, and integration issues
  • Analyse logs, metrics, Kubernetes resources, cloud resources, and pipeline execution to identify root causes
  • Support production deployments and environment changes
  • Improve observability, diagnostics, operational procedures, and deployment reliability
  • Identify recurring operational issues and automate or engineer them out where practical

Technical Strategy & Advisory

  • Provide technical input into cloud architecture, infrastructure design, and implementation decisions
  • Translate technical and business requirements into practical implementation approaches
  • Communicate technical issues, constraints, risks, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Balance engineering best practice with customer requirements, delivery timelines, and operational realities

Client Enablement and Knowledge Transfer

  • Work collaboratively with client infrastructure, security, networking, application, and architecture teams
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, implementation guides, and operational procedures
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer to client and internal teams
  • Contribute to reusable delivery patterns, automation, and engineering practices across the organisation

Multi-Cloud Capability

The role operates across AWS and Microsoft Azure environments and requires the design and implementation of cloud solutions that are secure, scalable, repeatable, and supportable. Platforms and tooling include:

  • AWS: EKS, VPC, Subnets, Security Groups, Load Balancers, IAM, Route 53, Secrets Manager, Systems Manager Parameter Store, ECR, S3, CloudWatch, KMS, PrivateLink and VPC Endpoints
  • Azure: AKS, Virtual Networks, Subnets, Private Endpoints, Private DNS, Load Balancers, Microsoft Entra ID, Managed Identities, Azure RBAC, Key Vault, Azure Container Registry, Storage, Log Analytics, Azure Monitor, ExpressRoute and private connectivity
  • Common Tooling: Terraform, Helm, kubectl, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Git, Bash, PowerShell, Python, Docker / OCI container tooling, Linux

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline
  • OR at least 5 years’ relevant professional experience with appropriate industry or vendor certifications
  • Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, and supporting production cloud environments
  • Strong practical experience with AWS and/or Microsoft Azure
  • Ideally, hands-on experience across both AWS and Azure; deep expertise in one cloud platform with practical experience in the other is also suitable
  • Strong practical experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes, preferably including AKS and/or EKS
  • Experience developing and maintaining Helm-based application deployments
  • Experience building and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines, preferably using Azure DevOps
  • Strong understanding of cloud networking concepts, including routing, DNS, private networking, firewalls, load balancers, and private endpoints
  • Practical understanding of cloud identity and access management, including AWS IAM, Microsoft Entra ID, managed identities, RBAC, and workload identity
  • Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with Git-based development and deployment workflows
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues spanning infrastructure, networking, Kubernetes, identity, and applications
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of technical problems, and drive them through to resolution
  • Ability to produce clear and maintainable technical documentation
