Data Journalist – Insurance and Banking

Do you want to  interrogate data-centric sources to break down complex financial and insurance topics and produce unique, compelling content that’s accessible to everyday Australian consumers? We are looking for a Data Journalist – Insurance and Banking to join CHOICE someone who brings  passion, curiosity and tenacity to pursue a consumer’s perspective, no matter the obstacles in their way.

About you

You’re a data-driven storyteller who’s equally comfortable interrogating a spreadsheet or writing for a lay audience. You know how to acquire, analyse and interpret complex datasets, and turn findings into stories and visualisations that address the information asymmetry consumers face in financial services and utilities. Persistent and tenacious, strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines without sacrificing accuracy, you balance engaging storytelling with CHOICE’s tone of voice, and collaborating well with internal and external content professionals, subject-matter experts and stakeholders.

Driven above all to uncover the truth in the data and turn it into advice that makes a genuine difference to consumers.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to rapidly turn around compelling, accurate content
• The ability to interpret complex information, e.g., insurance or mortgage terms and conditions, and translate it for entry into a structured database
• Skill in querying and interrogating databases, and extracting information for analysis and visualisation
• Strong analytical thinking and the ability to logically examine facts and situations
• Proficiency with content management systems, databases and data visualisation tools
• Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in Journalism, Statistics, Economics and/or Data Science.
• Experience in the construction and provision of financial services advice in an AFSL context is an advantage.

About the role

Reporting to the Managing Financial Content Editor, you will work within the Insurance, Banking & Utilities.

You will also: 

• Analyse data from primary and secondary sources and maintain databases that are easily accessible and verifiable for content creation.
• Identify consumer issues within the data and propose general advice to help members and the public, within a financial services license framework where necessary.
• Undertake data exception reporting and peer review of calculations and database code, maintaining the integrity of published data.
• Produce high-quality written content for CHOICE publications, with data-driven storytelling and visualisations.
• Translate complex concepts into video and social media formats in collaboration with the Video Producer and Social Media.
• Monitor and analyse content performance, using learnings to inform ideas and approaches.
• Answer customer queries, log queries designated as complaints in the complaints register. and provide general advice protocol as per  our Financial Services Guide
