About Us

Bidgerdii Community Health Service is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled primary health care service operating across Rockhampton and Central Queensland for more than 30 years. We provide comprehensive, culturally safe primary healthcare and wellbeing services and are committed to strengthening community outcomes through continuous improvement and strong leadership.

About the Role:

 This position is based at Bidgerdii’s Elphinstone Street office in Rockhampton and forms part of the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Team. The team delivers culturally safe counselling, psychological services, mental health education, prevention programs, cultural healing groups, and holistic support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the region, promoting wellbeing, resilience, and connection to family, culture, community, and Country. The SEWB Team supports individuals, families,and communities experiencing grief, loss, trauma, and other challenges affecting mental health and wellbeing, with a particular focus on those impacted by past removal policies and the intergenerational effects of trauma.Working closely with programs such as Link-Up, Wakai Waian Healing and other community partners, the team provides holistic, wraparound support that promotes healing, resilience, cultural connection, and self-determination.Guided by the principles of Social and Emotional Wellbeing, the service recognises the importance of connection to family, community, culture, Country, spirituality, and physical and emotional health. The role contributes to the delivery of prevention, support, and mental health education programs in accordance with Bidgerdii’s policies, procedures, and strategic priorities, helping to improve wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

 

About You:

You a compassionate, optimistic individual wanting to make a difference in peoples lives especially our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and also have the following:

  • Holds or working towards Certificate IV or higher in either counselling, psychology, social work mental health or related area.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the history and effects of the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.
  • Effective communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated managerial skills with experience and knowledge of social, emotional and mental health issues which may include culturally appropriate healing methods and trauma and grief counselling skills
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team and willingness to refer clients to other services when necessary
  • Competence with computers, especially the use of word-processing and database software
  • Willingness to abide by the policies and procedures of the organization

Practical Requirements:

  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD) – essential
  • Immunisation requirements – It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, and pertussis (whooping cough) during their employment.
  • Satisfactory Police Criminal History Check.
