Description

At Best Practice Software, our vision is communities connected with care. We’re achieving this through our mission to build a culture people love, where:

  • we value customers,
  • we work together for success,
  • we are accountable for our actions,
  • we innovate for the future, and
  • we celebrate diversity and inclusion.

If you share our vision and values, please consider this exciting career opportunity to join our growing team in Brisbane or Bundaberg, Queensland.

You’re unique, and we value that.

Communities connected with care

That’s our vision. We make the clinical and practice management software that over 7000 Australian Practices run on, used every working day by GPs, Practice Managers, Nurses, Allied Health Providers and Administrative Staff.

We’re looking for a Senior Software Developer to work on Bp Premier, our flagship product, and to lift the engineering practice of the team around them.

About the role

Bp Premier is the clinical system that thousands of Australian Practices open every morning. It has been in the field for over twenty years, and it is still where most of our customers do most of their work. It must keep working, and it has to keep pace with regulatory change.

The codebase reflects that history. New work is written in C#, with SQL Server underneath, and the long-standing core is written in Visual Objects. Almost nobody arrives knowing Visual Objects, and we’re not expecting you to. What we need is someone strong in SQL and .NET who has worked in large, old, complicated code before and wants more of it. We’ll teach you the rest.

This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to a Product Lead. Delivery is one-half of it. The other half is making the team better: pairing, writing down what currently lives in people’s heads, and making the codebase less intimidating to work in. We also want your outside perspective. If you’ve seen tooling or practices that worked well elsewhere, we want you to make the case for them here. Quality, clinical safety and patient privacy are part of the day job.

As a Senior Software Developer, we’ll call on your unique talents, skills, expertise, and experience to:

Work on the product that runs Australian general practice

  • Design and build new functionality in C#, and work into the Visual Objects core where the change needs to go;
  • Diagnose defects across a codebase where the cause and the symptom are often a long way apart;
  • Deliver regulatory and compliance changes on deadlines that don’t move.

Own the data

  • Write and tune T-SQL against a SQL Server schema you didn’t design and can’t casually change;
  • Keep performance sound for Practices carrying decades of patient history;
  • Build data and upgrade scripts that must run unattended across a large installed base.

Make the codebase safer to change

  • Grow automated test coverage around the areas that change most;
  • Improve the boundaries between old and new code, so C# work doesn’t get harder over time;
  • Weigh backwards compatibility and blast radius ahead of elegance.

Lift the team around you

  • Pair on the parts of the system that only a few people currently understand;
  • Document tribal knowledge so the next person doesn’t have to rediscover it – Set the standard in code review and technical design;
  • Challenge how things have always been done, and back it with a workable alternative.

We believe our ideal applicant will demonstrate the following attributes:

Essential

  • Substantial commercial development experience, typically seven years or more;
  • Deep SQL Server and T-SQL: schema design, indexing, execution plans, and the judgment to work inside a schema with a large installed base behind it;
  • Strong C# and .NET;
  • Demonstrated experience in a large, long-lived codebase with sparse documentation and limited test coverage, and the patience that goes with it;
  • A track record of bringing other developers with you, whether or not it was in your title
  • Australian work rights.

Highly desirable

  • Visual Objects, X# / XSharp, or an xBase background such as Clipper, dBase or FoxPro;
  • Other long-lived Windows stacks: Delphi, VB6, PowerBuilder, WinForms;
  • Maintaining on-premise software across a large installed base, including upgrade and migration tooling;
  • Introducing automated testing to a codebase that didn’t have it;
  • Medical software, e-health or another regulated field. FHIR and Australian primary healthcare experience are a big plus.
