Youth Workers & Residential Youth Workers (Multiple Opportunities)

BackTrack Youth Works – Armidale, NSW Work Type: Part-time and casual opportunities

Salary: Competitive + salary packaging + wellbeing perks

Walk alongside young people. Build connection. Change lives.

BackTrack is a nationally recognised organisation supporting young people who are doing it tough to find safety, purpose, and a community that never gives up on them. We work differently — with dogs, with farms, with real-world learning, and with a whole lot of heart.

As we continue to grow, we’re looking to connect with people who want to be part of this work. We have opportunities across our residential programs, non-residential youth work, and lead youth worker space — and we’re building a talent pool for upcoming vacancies.

If you’re someone who shows up, listens deeply, and believes in young people even on their hardest days, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing

Depending on your experience and the role you step into, you may:

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with young people through day-to-day support, counselling, mentoring and practical life skills
  • Support young people in residential settings, helping create safe, structured, home-like environments (residential youth worker roles only)
  • Facilitate activities, programs, and that build confidence, skilly building, capability and belonging
  • Work alongside families, internal programs, community partners and other services
  • Support assessment and goal‑planning processes, helping identify strengths, skill‑building needs and progress against Mastery Unit competencies.
  • Complete checklists, notes, evaluation tools and reports accurately and on time, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Contribute to a culture grounded in the Circle of Courage, trauma-informed practice and BackTrack values

What You’ll Bring

You don’t need to tick every box — what matters most is your heart for the work and your ability to show up for young people. We’re looking for people with:

  • Experience working with young people in community, education, residential or wellbeing settings
  • Experience supporting youth programs or group activities, ideally in regional or community settings.
  • A trauma-informed approach, with the ability to translate knowledge into practical, everyday support for young people.
  • Experience in alcohol and other drugs support settings is highly advantageous.
  • Experience supporting young people with mental health challenges, or working in the mental health sector, is highly advantageous.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a calm, grounded presence
  • Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to a positive, values-driven culture
  • Relevant qualifications (Youth Work, Community Services, Social Work or similar) or related discipline
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings/weekends where required
  • WWCC, National Police Check and Driver’s Licence

Why BackTrack?

  • Additional Annual Leave
  • Gifted Christmas leave
  • Salary packaging to boost take-home pay
  • Supportive, passionate team with strong community roots
  • Work in a nationally recognised organisation making real impact
  • Opportunities to grow, learn and step into leadership
