We are seeking an experienced and passionate Chef to join our professional kitchen team at our Burwood Road, Hawthorn venue.
About the Position
The Chef will be responsible for planning, preparing and cooking food in accordance with the venue’s menu, quality standards and operational requirements. The successful candidate will work as part of a structured kitchen team and contribute to efficient food preparation and service during busy trading periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and cook menu items to a consistently high standard.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of seasonal menus.
- Monitor food quality, presentation and consistency throughout preparation and service.
- Coordinate food preparation and mise en place for breakfast and lunch services.
- Prepare meat, poultry, seafood, sauces, stocks and other menu components using appropriate cooking techniques.
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of grilling, braising, slow cooking and other commercial cooking methods.
- Assist with estimating food requirements and ordering kitchen supplies.
- Monitor stock levels, stock rotation, freshness and food wastage.
- Maintain effective kitchen workflow during high-volume service periods.
- Communicate effectively with the Head Chef, kitchen team, venue management and front-of-house staff.
- Assist with training and supporting junior kitchen staff where required.
- Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety.
- Ensure kitchen equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
- Assist with catering preparation and other food production requirements when required.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum five years’ relevant experience as a Chef in commercial kitchens.
- Diploma or advanced level qualification in Commercial Cookery, Hospitality or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and cooking food in a professional hospitality environment.
- Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques and menu execution.
- Experience working in fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environments.
- Knowledge of food safety, hygiene and safe food handling procedures.
- Experience with stock control, food ordering and kitchen organisation.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and maintain consistent quality during busy service periods.
- Ability to work across a flexible hospitality roster, including weekends and public holidays where required.
Skills and Attributes
The successful applicant will be organised, reliable and committed to maintaining high standards of food quality and presentation. Strong attention to detail, communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a structured kitchen team are essential.
Experience in modern café cuisine, seasonal menus, catering, grill cooking, sauce and stock preparation, and advanced food preparation techniques will be highly regarded.
