For more than 20 years, Westbury Stud has been operating at the top end of the New Zealand thoroughbred industry; breeding elite racehorses who consistently out-perform on the global stage.

Spread across two picturesque locations, Westbury Stud has openings available for Stud Grooms at our Karaka (Auckland) farm with a focus on our Broodmare and Yearling divisions. We are looking for strong team players who enjoy the fast pace of the breeding season!

Our roster ensures you receive 4 days off every fortnight (even in the breeding season), providing a great work-life balance year-round.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Maintain a high level of Health & Safety in all areas of the farm and adhere to all Health and Safety guidelines.

Providing our horses with the highest level of care at all times.

Assist in the education and preparation of yearlings for sales including assisting during pre-sale inspection parades and attending sales when required.

Assist with broodmare reproductive work and teasing, preparing broodmares for service and assisting in the service barn.

Execute horse feed regimes, including making feeds, feeding out, and cleaning feeders and water troughs.

Exercising the horses using the horse walker and fitting rollers and side-reins, transferring horses between boxes and paddocks, presenting horses to clients.

General stable duties, including yard work and mucking out.

Ensure all facilities are kept clean, tidy and presentable at all times.

Assist in record keeping of movements, daily worksheets, sick horse reports and the like.

Any other reasonable duties that your Team Leader or Manager may require.

Act as support to the divisional Team Leaders.

About You:

At least 2 years of horse stud or veterinary experience. Thoroughbred stud experience preferred.

Excellent horse handling skills across broodmares and foals, yearlings and racehorse spellers.

Experience working with stallions or in the serving barn environment would be an advantage.

Knowledge of and ability to provide basic to intermediate equine medical care.

Ability to offer guidance / teach others and upskill less experienced staff.

Have professional personal presentation and have a keen eye for detail.

Have a desire to learn.

Be calm, patient, and gentle around animals.

Mature and responsible work attitude, with reliable and organised habits.

Be able to work under pressure and enjoys working in a culturally diverse workplace.

Is a strong team player who can use your own initiative, be flexible, adaptable, and resilient.

Can follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.

We offer a competitive salary, which will reflect your experience and expertise along with onsite accommodation and career pathways for further career growth through professional development in equine care. A full-time position, the usual hours will be the equivalent of 40 hours per week from 7:30am – 4:30pm, as per our ten days worked and four days off roster to help assist with a better work, life balance.
