Senior Legal Writer

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Writer to join our Marketing and Communications (MarComms) team. In this role, you will write, edit, and publish high‑quality legal content for Aotearoa’s legal profession and the public. You will lead the drafting and publication of articles that support the Law Society’s regulatory function, including timely summaries of Standards Committee and Tribunal decisions, and contribute to wider communication initiatives across law reform, advocacy, access to justice and developments in the courts.

Working closely with the Professional Standards team, Policy, Courts and Government, and other internal stakeholders, you will play a key part in ensuring the Law Society communicates accurately, clearly, and effectively on matters central to the profession. You will also contribute long‑form editorial content, case summaries, website updates, podcasts, presentations, and other communication outputs.

Our ideal applicant will have:

  • A law degree with at least five years’ experience, preferably in a legal or regulatory environment.
  • Proven experience in legal writing, editing, or journalism (a relevant journalism/communications qualification is an advantage).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong legal analysis and the ability to translate complex legal material into clear plain English.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, sound judgement, and high attention to detail.
  • The ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively across teams.
  • Political and legislative awareness, with an understanding of the context in which the Law Society operates.
  • Ability to prioritise, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • High levels of integrity, discretion, emotional intelligence, and self‑awareness.
