The Opportunity:

As the Duty Manager at Ltyentye Apurte, you will play an important role in the safe and effective operation of the community swimming pool as part of the Y NT Remote Pools Project.

Reporting to the Aquatic Coordinator, this is a hands-on role focused on aquatic safety, water quality, facility operations, team leadership and community program delivery. You will lead Pool Lifeguards and Customer Service Officers during your shifts and act as the senior staff member on-site in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator.

Working with the Remote Pools Project provides a unique opportunity to live and work in a remote First Nations community while contributing to a vital community service. Through safe pool operations, water safety education and community-led programs, the project aims to improve health and wellbeing, strengthen water safety skills and support community connection.

The role involves rostered hours including weekends, evenings and public holidays and requires active work on pool deck, in plant rooms and during community events.

Responsibilities:

  • Aquatic Supervision & Safety: Lead lifeguard teams during shifts, maintain vigilant supervision of aquatic areas and act as the lead responder during emergencies and incidents.
  • Water Quality Management: Conduct and record routine water quality testing, monitor pool conditions, identify and resolve minor pool plant issues and ensure the safe storage, handling and use of chemicals.
  • Facility Operations: Complete opening and closing checks, ensure the facility is clean, safe and operational, coordinate equipment setup for programs and events, and report maintenance requirements.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead and support Pool Lifeguards and Customer Service Officers during shifts, mentor local staff and volunteers, and support the induction and on-the-job training of new team members.
  • Operational Leadership: Act as the senior staff member on-site during assigned shifts, making day-to-day operational decisions in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Community Engagement: Build positive and respectful relationships with community members and leaders, support culturally appropriate programs and help ensure pool activities reflect local needs and values.
  • Program Delivery: Support aquatic, water safety and community programs and promote participation in activities that contribute to community health, wellbeing and connection.
  • Customer Service & Communication: Provide a visible and approachable presence at the facility, respond professionally to enquiries and concerns and communicate effectively with staff, community members and the Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Administration & Reporting: Maintain accurate operational records including water quality results, staff certifications and incident reports, and assist with reporting, budget tracking and inventory management.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in lifeguarding and aquatic facility operations.
    • Strong situational awareness, communication and leadership skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Sound knowledge of public pool safety standards and water quality management.
    • Ability and willingness to live and work in a remote First Nations community
