Description

Join Volta Energy Group – Power the Future

Step into the front line of Australia’s energy transformation. At Volta Energy Group, we don’t just talk about impact, we deliver it. Our projects span utility-scale renewables, battery storage, data centres, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and heavy fleet electrification. With Advisory and Project Delivery under one roof, we deliver across the full lifecycle of energy infrastructure projects – from strategy and feasibility to construction, commissioning and operations. Our clients include major renewable and data centre developers, Tier 1 construction firms, leading utilities, just to name a few.

Volta has recently joined OCU Group – a leader in energy transition and utility infrastructure services across the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Being part of OCU gives us greater financial capacity, operational scale, and delivery capability, enabling us to take on larger and more complex projects while maintaining the responsive, high-quality service our clients expect. We’re in a period of significant growth as demand for our work continues to grow, and we’re scaling our teams to meet our expanding project pipeline. That means real opportunity to take on landmark projects, broaden your expertise, and grow your career alongside a business that’s expanding fast.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director, Engineering, you’ll lead the development of structural engineering outputs including high-quality electrical designs, calculations, analyses, reports, and specifications for major infrastructure assets. You’ll work across a broad spectrum of energy projects – from concept to execution – contributing to solutions that are integral to Australia’s future energy infrastructure. This is a role for an engineer ready to step beyond technical delivery into genuine leadership – owning complex problems, setting the standards others work to, and growing the capability of the team around them.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the technical integration of primary electrical plant with civil and structural design across substation projects – owning equipment layouts, foundations, structures, earthing, access, and constructability.
  • Direct design scopes, detailed designs, and installation scopes for brownfield and greenfield substation and lines projects, from concept through construction support.
  • Own the primary – civil interface, applying sound engineering judgement to deliver efficient, buildable, and compliant solutions to complex design challenges.
  • Drive staging, constructability, operability and maintainability (COM), and safety-in-design reviews, ensuring compliance with AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000, AS 1170, utility standards, and WHS-by-design obligations.
  • Lead multidisciplinary delivery with specialist engineers, delivery partners, clients, OEMs, and contractors – endorsing integrated deliverables and managing design change to control cost, schedule, and rework risk.
  • Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing civil/structural engineering team, while championing improvements to processes, specifications, and standards.

About You

You’re a qualified Civil/Structural Engineer with a proven record of delivering complex substation and infrastructure projects in the energy and utilities sector. You bring the technical authority to lead complex primary electrical–civil/structural interfaces, thrive in multidisciplinary environments, and are energised by real-world impact. Just as importantly, you’re motivated by building, mentoring, and leading the capability around you as this team grows.

You’ll also bring:

  • A degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related discipline, with CPEng (or working towards) through Engineers Australia and relevant state registration (e.g. RPEV) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years delivering HV substation projects across concept, detailed design, and construction support – integrating primary plant with civil, structural, earthing, access, and constructability requirements.
  • Deep utilities and energy experience, with strong command of project lifecycles and the application of engineering principles.
  • Proven authority managing primary – civil interfaces and ensuring compliance with AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000, AS 1170, utility standards, and WHS-by-design obligations.
  • A track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and engaging clients, OEMs, reviewers, and contractors, while managing design change to control cost, schedule, and rework risk.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, empower, and lead engineers – with the appetite to help build out a new team.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and industry-standard design and analysis software, with a record of high-quality technical reports and documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, including simplifying complex analysis for non-engineers, and a proactive, detail-oriented commitment to safety, compliance, and engineering excellence.
