Description

Board Chair

Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre | Perth, Western Australia

The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre is seeking a Chair to lead its Board through the next stage of the organisation’s growth.

Since opening in 2014, the Centre has become a trusted source of support for Western Australian children, young people and families living with type 1 diabetes. It is a well-regarded health promotion charity with a strong track record of impact, a clear strategic direction and a dynamic Chief Executive Officer committed to expanding its reach. The Centre is now entering a period of transformation and growth guided by its Strategic Plan 2030.

The Role

The Chair leads the Board in setting strategy, overseeing performance and safeguarding the Centre’s long-term sustainability. The Chair works closely with the CEO as a sounding board and constructive challenger, ensuring that ambition is matched by sound financial planning and good governance. The Chair also represents the Centre with funders, partners and the wider type 1 diabetes community.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Board Leadership & Governance: Chair Board meetings and general meetings, including the AGM, set agendas with the CEO, and foster a board culture of respect, inclusion and constructive challenge.
  • Strategy & Sustainability: Lead the Board’s oversight of Strategic Plan 2030, ensuring growth is matched by sound financial planning, diversified revenue and effective risk management.
  • CEO Partnership: Meet regularly with the CEO as a trusted sounding board, and support the CEO’s annual performance review through the People and Performance Subcommittee.
  • Board Effectiveness: Lead board and director performance reviews and board succession planning.
  • Representation: Represent the Centre, alongside the CEO, with funders, partners, government, the health sector and the type 1 diabetes community.

What You Will Bring

  • Board Experience: Prior board experience, ideally including time as a chair or committee chair in the for-purpose sector.
  • Governance & Financial Stewardship: A strong grasp of governance and financial stewardship, including the discipline to align growth with secure and diversified revenue.
  • Facilitative Leadership: Skill in building consensus, running effective meetings and drawing out the best from directors with different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Candour & Judgement: The confidence to give clear and respectful feedback, and the judgement to support management while holding it to account.
  • Commitment to Purpose: A genuine commitment to the Centre’s purpose and to improving the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes.
  • Eligibility: Eligible to act as a Responsible Person under ACNC requirements.
  • Highly Desirable: Previous experience as a Chair or Deputy Chair; GAICD or an equivalent governance qualification; experience in health, health promotion or community services; experience overseeing growth, fundraising or strategic partnerships; and established networks across WA government, health, corporate or philanthropic sectors. Lived experience of type 1 diabetes, or a close connection to the community, is valued but not essential.

The Board

The Board combines long-serving directors who have made significant and sustained contributions to the Centre with newer directors bringing fresh skills from corporate and professional backgrounds. It is a collegial group that values open discussion, mutual respect and a shared focus on the families the Centre serves. The Board has recently modernised its constitution, giving the incoming Chair a contemporary governance foundation to build on.

Why Join Us

  • Meaningful Impact: Lead an organisation that makes a real difference to Western Australian families living with type 1 diabetes.
  • A Strong Foundation: A modernised constitution, a clear strategic plan and an experienced, committed CEO.
  • Shape the Next Chapter: Guide the Centre through a defining period of growth under Strategic Plan 2030.
