Smart Environmental Ltd works on behalf of local councils, businesses, and communities, providing rubbish and recycling collection services throughout New Zealand. Acquired by Blue Planet and operating a large fleet of collection vehicles and line haul operations, our mission is to divert waste from landfill and create cleaner, more sustainable communities.
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Driver Trainer to support our HSE team by delivering driver training, coaching, and assessments across our operations. This role is responsible for promoting safe driving practices, supporting driver development, maintaining training records, and ensuring drivers meet company and regulatory requirements.
Based in Auckland, this is a hands-on role that requires regular travel to our operational sites throughout New Zealand. You will work closely with operational leaders, drivers, and the wider HSE team to strengthen driving capability and safety performance across the business.
This is a permanent, full-time Monday to Friday position.
About You
We are looking for someone with strong driver training experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with employees at all levels.
As the role requires frequent travel and independent work, you will be comfortable managing your own workload while remaining connected with the wider team.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience as a Driver Trainer, Driver Assessor, or in a similar transport industry role
- Class 1–5 driver licence, with a strong understanding of safe driving practices
- A current New Zealand Driving Instructor (I) endorsement
- Waste industry experience, including knowledge of waste collection vehicles, is preferred
- W, T, R (wheels, tracks, rollers) and F (forklift) endorsements preferred
- Excellent coaching, mentoring, and communication skills
- Confidence delivering both classroom-based and practical training
- Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping skills
- The ability to build effective working relationships with staff at all levels
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
- Competent Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout New Zealand
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver driver inductions, training, coaching, and competency assessments
- Support the development and implementation of driver training programmes
- Conduct driver observations and provide constructive feedback to improve performance and safety outcomes
- Maintain accurate training records and competency documentation
- Support incident investigations relating to driving activities where required
- Promote safe driving practices and company driving standards
- Assist with compliance requirements relating to driver qualifications, licences, and endorsements
- Work closely with operational managers to identify training needs and development opportunities
- Monitor and report on driver training and competency across the business
- Assist with HSE initiatives, communications, and continuous improvement activities
