Summary:
We are seeking motivated Interns and Placement Students to join the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) across our Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs offices. This is a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience while contributing to an organisation committed to delivering culturally responsive legal and justice services to Aboriginal people across the Northern Territory.
Internship and placement opportunities are available across several areas of NAAJA, including our Criminal and Civil Legal Practice, Community Legal Education (CLE), Policy, Media and Communications, Throughcare, Finance, and People and Capability teams. Placements provide valuable workplace experience, allowing interns to develop professional skills while working alongside experienced staff in a supportive and culturally respectful environment. Depending on the placement area, interns may assist with legal research, policy development, communications, community support programs, financial administration, human resources, client engagement, project work and other operational activities. Our Throughcare team supports Aboriginal people transitioning from custody back into the community through culturally appropriate case management, advocacy and practical support to help build positive futures.
Responsibilities:
- Attend client meetings, take notes, and summarise key discussion points.
- Support the preparation and drafting of legal documents, including contracts and briefs.
- Attend client meetings and take notes to ensure accurate documentation of discussions.
- Collaborate with legal professionals to gather information and prepare case files.
- Maintain and organise case files and legal documentation in accordance with firm policies.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving processes and client service.
- Assist with day-to-day activities and projects within your allocated team.
- Conduct research, gather information and prepare reports or documentation as required.
- Attend meetings, take notes and summarise key discussion points where appropriate.
- Support the preparation of documents, correspondence and other team resources.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
- Assist with client, stakeholder or community engagement activities where appropriate to the placement.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues while demonstrating professionalism, cultural respect and
confidentiality.
- Contribute ideas to improve processes, service delivery and team outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Law or a related field.
- Previous internship experience in a legal environment is preferred but not essential.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of legal terminology and procedures
- Familiarity with legal research databases commonly used in Australia.
- Ability to maintain strict client confidentiality.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently when required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
