Description

Are you an experienced bookkeeping and payroll professional who enjoys solving problems, making sense of numbers, finding better ways of doing things and sharing what you know with others?

Even better – are you the person others naturally come to when something doesn’t reconcile, a deadline is looming or nobody quite knows why the system is doing that?

Strong bookkeeping and payroll experience are integral to this role, as is your ability to leverage automation tools and apps to streamline processes and develop useful reporting that adds value across the business.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll still be in the detail, but you’ll also keep an eye on the bigger picture: what needs doing, what’s getting stuck and where the team needs some help.

We’ll give you the ownership and support to keep our accounts processes running properly and you’ll help our team stay organised, meet deadlines and get the job done right.

About the role

You’ll join our Accounts Team and take responsibility for key bookkeeping, payroll, reporting and financial processes across MYKRA.

You’ll manage our fortnightly payroll, reconciliations, month-end processes, overhead reporting and forecasting. You’ll prepare financial reports, investigate variances and help make sure the information we rely on is accurate and timely.

Reporting to our Accounting Manager, you’ll also coordinate the day-to-day workflow of the Accounts Team. You won’t have direct reports, so this isn’t about sitting back and managing people from a distance. It’s about being the experienced person in the team who can set priorities, keep an eye on workloads, help solve the harder problems and make sure important things don’t fall through the cracks.

You’ll also train and mentor less experienced team members and help us build enough knowledge across the team that critical Accounts processes aren’t dependent on one person.

And importantly, we want someone who looks beyond the transaction.

  • If something doesn’t make sense, investigate it.
  • If a report could tell us more, improve it.
  • If a process is unnecessarily painful, challenge it.

“That’s how we’ve always done it” isn’t a particularly convincing argument around here.

What you’ll get up to

  • Managing fortnightly payroll and associated statutory obligations.
  • Completing bank and credit card reconciliations and month-end processes.
  • Coordinating overhead forecasting, reporting and annual budget activities.
  • Maintaining oversight of AP, AR, payments and debtor-management workflows.
  • Developing useful reports that add value to managers and our Senior Leadership Group.
  • Investigating accounting variances and following issues through to resolution.
  • Coordinating Accounts Team priorities, workloads and deadlines.
  • Helping the team resolve more complex AP, AR, reconciliation and system queries.
  • Maintaining accurate financial data across Xero, Procore, OneCore, AroFlo and Lentune.
  • Training and mentoring Accounts Team members.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve our processes, systems and reporting.

Ultimately, we’ll trust you to keep the numbers accurate, keep the work moving and spot issues before they become problems.

Here are five things we think will make you ideal for the role:

  1. You know your way around bookkeeping – You either have a bookkeeping qualification or strong demonstrated experience doing the work. You’re confident with reconciliations, month-end processes, all facets of AP and AR, and maintaining accurate financial data – and when something doesn’t balance, you’ll apply a methodical approach to resolving it.
  2. You understand payroll – You have practical payroll experience and a sound understanding of Australian payroll requirements. Superannuation, PAYG, Payroll Tax, Long Service Leave, ReturnToWorkSA and Child Support aren’t unfamiliar territory.
  3. You like figuring things out – You enjoy working with numbers and getting to the bottom of discrepancies. You can identify trends, investigate variances and turn financial information into something useful rather than simply producing another spreadsheet.
  4. You’re comfortable with systems – Strong Excel skills are important and you’ll be working across several different accounting and operational platforms. Power BI & Power Automate experience would be highly regarded, but curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn matter just as much.
  5. You take ownership, and bring people with you – You’re organised, approachable and comfortable dealing with people across the business. You don’t need someone standing over you to get things done. You’re also happy helping someone else work through a problem rather than saying, “That’s not my job.” You know when to make a decision, when to ask a question and when something needs escalating.

And here are three reasons we might not be right for you…we’d rather be upfront.

  1. You prefer to focus only on your own workload – This role requires you to have visibility over the broader Accounts workflow. Sometimes you’ll need to change priorities, help someone else or jump into a problem you didn’t create. If your ideal working day is completing your own list and ignoring everyone else’s, this probably isn’t the role for you.
  2. You want purely transactional Accounts work – There is plenty of hands-on bookkeeping – but we also want you to think. We’ll expect you to analyse information, question things that don’t look right, improve reporting and challenge processes that could work better.
  3. You like lots of day-to-day direction – We value trust and independence. You’ll have the support of our Accounting Manager, but we need someone who can organise themselves, make sensible decisions and follow things through. If you’re waiting to be told what to do next, we’ll probably both become frustrated.

What’s MYKRA like?

We’re proud to be a Certified Great Place to Work™, but our culture is probably better explained by four pretty simple principles:

BUILT ON TRUST – Own it and play your part.

WE WIN TOGETHER – Success is a team effort.

DO THE WORK PROUD – Get the job done right.

KEEP IT REAL – Relationships matter most.

These aren’t slogans we’ve put on the wall and forgotten about. They’re how we expect people to work with each other, our clients and our subcontractors.
