About the Role
Longton Blackwell is seeking an experienced Lawyer / Associate (3+ years PQE) to join our Sydney team and help grow our taxation work.
This is an excellent opportunity for a tax lawyer who wants broad exposure across tax advice and structuring, tax planning, and audits and disputes with revenue authorities. You will act for small and medium-sized businesses and individuals, with real carriage of your own matters, direct client contact and the chance to help shape the practice.
You will work with colleagues across our national team, and be supported by principals and senior lawyers in related practice areas, including business advisory, property, banking and finance, wills and estates, and dispute resolution. You will work with them on matters that cross disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Take carriage of your own tax matters from instructions through to completion,
- Advise on income tax, capital gains tax, GST and other taxes arising in business, property and investment transactions.
- Advise on the tax aspects of business and asset structures, including trusts and related structures, restructures and reorganisations.
- Advise on state taxes and duties, including stamp duty, land tax and payroll tax
- Assist clients with tax planning and with compliance with their tax obligations.
- Act for clients in ATO and State revenue authority reviews, audits, objections and negotiations, working with our dispute resolution and commercial litigation teams where matters escalate.
- Prepare tax advice, research and technical opinions, and brief counsel where required.
- Work with colleagues across our national team and related practice areas on cross-disciplinary matters.
- Work with and develop paralegals and junior lawyers who support your matters.
- Maintain accurate file records and ensure compliance with professional obligations and firm procedures.
- Contribute to building the tax practice, including client relationships, precedents and processes.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Admission as an Australian Lawyer, with a current NSW practising certificate (or eligibility for one).
- 3+ years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) in tax law, gained in private practice, an accounting or professional services firm, or an in-house team.
- Experience in tax advisory work and/or tax disputes, with a willingness to work across both.
- A strong understanding of Australian taxation law, including income tax, CGT and GST.
- Further tax qualifications (such as a Master of Taxation or similar) completed, in progress, or a commitment to undertake them.
- The ability to run matters independently, using sound commercial and legal judgement, and to know when to escalate.
- Strong legal research, drafting and analytical skills, and the ability to explain technical tax issues clearly to clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational abilities.
- A collaborative approach, including comfort working with colleagues across the firm.
