Kalano is seeking motivated and compassionate individuals to join our team in the following roles:

  • SUS Support Worker (Sobering Up Shelter)
  • AOD Support Worker (Venndale Residential Rehabilitation Centre)

Applicants may apply for either role or both, depending on their experience and interest.

About the Roles

SUS Support Worker – Sobering Up Shelter

This role provides afternoon and overnight support within an 18-bed Sobering Up Shelter for individuals affected by alcohol and volatile substances.

You will play a key role in ensuring client safety, wellbeing, and dignity while they recover from the immediate effects of substance use.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision and support to alcohol and substance-affected clients
  • Conduct intake, assessments, and referrals to appropriate services
  • Apply harm minimisation and early intervention strategies
  • Respond to emergencies and follow reporting protocols
  • Assist with daily operations including cleaning, food preparation, laundry, and bed making
  • Complete administrative tasks including case notes, incident reports, and emails
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and community members

Location: Sobering Up Shelter, Katherine NT (Located in town)

Days & Hours of work: 

Tuesday to Saturday

  • Afternoon Shift: 3pm – 11:30pm
  • Night Shift: 11:30pm – 8am

MUST be available to work Night Shift Tuesday – Friday.

AOD Support Worker – Venndale Residential Rehabilitation

This role supports participants in a residential rehabilitation setting, primarily after hours, focusing on safety, wellbeing, and engagement in recovery.

You will assist with daily routines, life skills development, and maintaining a structured, supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support daily operations including cleaning, meal preparation, and maintenance
  • Monitor client wellbeing through routine checks and structured activities
  • Transport clients to appointments and outings as required
  • Maintain accurate client records and case notes
  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations
  • Ensure compliance with WHS and organisational policies
  • Work collaboratively with team members and case managers
  • Support clients in developing life skills and independence

Location: Venndale Rehabilitation Centre (located 30km from Katherine)

Days & Hours of work: 

Venndale’s operates 7 days a week.

Shift times:

  • Day Shifts: 8am – 4:30pm
  • Afternoon Shift: 3pm – 11:30pm
  • Night Shift: 11:30pm – 8am

MUST be available to work Night shifts during the week.

Salary and Conditions for both roles:

Employment Type: Casual

Wage range: $35.68 per hour (including Casual loading)

Plus applicable shift allowances and penalties, as per Kalano’s Enterprise Agreement.

The applicants should possess the following:

Qualifications

  • Certificate in Alcohol & Other Drugs or Community Services (or willing to obtain)

Mandatory before commencement:

  • Valid NT Drivers Licence
  • Valid NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
  • National Police Check

Experience & Skills

  • Experience working with Indigenous people
  • Competent knowledge of computer software and systems (i.e. Word, Excel, etc)
  • Understanding of the barriers and challenges that Indigenous people face in the NT
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients, staff and stakeholders
  • Sound knowledge of work, health and safety principles and practices
