About the Role

Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation is seeking Casual Youth Workers to join our Safe Spaces team at Hedland House.

The Safe Spaces Program provides a safe, welcoming and culturally supportive environment for children and young people who may be at risk or require a safe place and additional support.

As a Casual Youth Worker, you will provide practical and emotional support to children and young people accessing Hedland House. You will help create a calm, safe and nurturing environment, respond appropriately to challenging or crisis situations, and support young people using a trauma-informed and culturally respectful approach.

This role would suit someone who is passionate about working with children and young people and wants to make a positive difference within the Hedland community.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

Provide supervision, support and engagement for children and young people accessing Hedland House.

Work across a flexible casual roster, which may include day, night and weekend shifts.

Maintain a safe, welcoming and culturally appropriate environment.

Build positive and respectful relationships with children and young people.

Respond calmly and appropriately to incidents, challenging behaviours and crisis situations.

Use trauma-informed and culturally safe practices when supporting children and young people.

Support the safety, wellbeing and individual needs of young people accessing the service.

Complete case notes, records, handovers and incident reports accurately and within required timeframes.

Follow Julyardi’s policies, procedures, child-safety requirements and professional boundaries.

Liaise appropriately with families, community services and emergency contacts when required.

Work collaboratively with other Julyardi staff, community members, Elders and relevant services.

Participate in team meetings, training, reflective practice and professional development.

Undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the position.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

Experience working with children and/or young people, particularly those experiencing vulnerability or complex needs.

A strong understanding of and ability to work respectfully with the local Aboriginal community.

An understanding of trauma-informed practice, child safety and culturally safe service delivery.

The ability to remain calm and professional when responding to challenging or crisis situations.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

The ability to establish appropriate and respectful relationships with children and young people.

An understanding of professional boundaries, privacy and confidentiality.

Good time-management, record-keeping and basic computer skills.

The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team.

Experience working with people experiencing complex needs, including mental health, alcohol and other drug issues or involvement with the justice system, would be highly regarded.

Essential Requirements

Successful applicants will need to hold, or be willing to obtain where appropriate:

Current unrestricted C-Class Driver’s Licence

National Police Certificate

WA Working with Children Check

First Aid and CPR certification

Australian working rights

Ability to work a flexible casual roster, including nights and weekends.

Relevant qualifications or studies in Youth Work, Community Services, Mental Health, Child and Family Services or a related area would be highly regarded.
