Description
About us
Pitcrew AI designs and builds Autonomous Inspection Systems (AIS): rapidly deployable, solar-powered trailers and skids that use thermal imaging, computer vision and AI to inspect haul trucks as they drive past, without stopping them. Our systems operate at mine sites globally, including Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas, for some of the world’s largest mining companies.
The role
You will report to the Head of Hardware Engineering and Operations and lead the hardware design of our AIS units, bringing mechanical structures, enclosures, electrical and power systems, sensors and controls together into rugged, solar-powered trailers and skids. You will also lead customer project engineering, provide technical leadership to technicians and contractors, and support deployed systems across Australia and overseas. It is a hands-on, multidisciplinary role in a small team, and your designs go straight into the field. The role is based in Perth, working closely with the hardware team in Newcastle.
What you’ll do
• Lead system-level hardware design of AIS units, integrating mechanical structures, enclosures, electrical and power systems, sensors and controls into one reliable product
• Produce mechanical CAD models and drawings in Onshape, and lead development of our next-generation skid and trailer designs
• Integrate thermal and optical cameras, sensors, RFID, edge computing and remote connectivity, including mounting, sealing and cable management
• Design for harsh mine-site conditions, including dust, heat, vibration, ingress protection and corrosion
• Design off-grid solar and battery systems, including DC architecture, low voltage design and PLC logic
• Prepare designs, calculations and drawings for review and approval, including electrical drawings in AutoCAD
• Lead safety in design, including hazard identification and risk assessments
• Run factory and site acceptance testing, and commission systems on site
• Provide remote and on-site technical support for deployed systems
• Manage the technical side of suppliers, fabricators and contract builders, including non-conformances and corrective actions
• Own the bill of materials, design reviews and configuration records for each deployed unit
• Prepare customer interface documents and support customer engineering, cyber security and site-readiness reviews
• Lead technical work packages, mentor and supervise technicians and contractors, and improve our technical standards and practices
About you
• Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
• Hands-on hardware engineering experience across design, build and commissioning of integrated electromechanical systems
• A track record of designing products or systems that integrate mechanical, electrical and controls elements
• Mechanical CAD (Onshape, SolidWorks or similar) and electrical drawings in AutoCAD
• Experience designing equipment for harsh outdoor or industrial environments
• Working knowledge of low voltage DC design and AS/NZS 3000, 3008, 4509 and 5033
• PLC programming experience
• Confident working directly with customer engineering teams
• Experience leading technical work packages or projects, and mentoring or supervising others
• Willing to travel domestically and internationally for site visits
• Current driver’s licence, and able to meet client mine-site access requirements, which may include medical and fitness-for-work testing
Highly regarded
• Experience designing and sizing standalone solar and battery systems
• Experience in mining or with heavy mobile equipment
• Sheet metal and fabrication design for manufacture
• Experience with off-grid inverter, charge controller and battery monitoring equipment
• Thermography or thermal imaging
• Python for engineering tools and data analysis
• Effective use of AI tools to speed up engineering analysis, documentation and coding
Why Pitcrew AI
• Real ownership of technical decisions, with technology that is in service on mine sites now
• Products that remove people from hazardous work around heavy vehicles
• Based in Perth, supporting sites across Australia and overseas, with occasional travel to our Newcastle team
• Competitive salary plus super
