The IJM Australia Advancement Office was established in 2014 to fuel IJM’s global mission by mobilising Australians’ resources and influence to protect people living in poverty from violence.
This position is based in Melbourne – Australia, Hybrid, and reports to the Chief Partnerships Officer.
Job Brief
For almost 30 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. Nine out of nine times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50% and 86% in specific caseworks and jurisdictions. As we pursue our global mission to protect 500 million people from violence, we are investing in our next phase of growth in Australia.
The Philanthropy Manager will play a critical role in shaping IJM Australia’s presence in Melbourne, drive fundraising growth across Victoria and manage donor relationships in Tasmania and South Australia. As IJM’s senior fundraising representative in the region, this role will build and manage a caseload of existing major donors, foundations and trusts, and high-capacity prospects while expanding IJM’s donor base, visibility, profile, influence and supporter engagement.
Reporting to the Chief Partnerships Officer, this is a unique opportunity for a fundraising leader who will identify new opportunities, establish the systems, relationships, team capability and other important foundations required for long-term growth in Victoria.
Success in this role will be demonstrated through fundraising performance, exceptional relationship management, and successful leadership that reflects IJM’s mission, values and culture.
Success Measures (First 12-24 Months)
- Achieve agreed annual fundraising revenue targets.
- Grow and steward a high-performing portfolio of major donors, trusts and foundations.
- Strengthen IJM Australia’s profile within the Victorian philanthropic community.
- Increase the value and quality of the major donor pipeline.
- Improve donor retention, engagement and long-term partnership outcomes.
- Contribute to the successful growth of IJM Australia’s fundraising and brand awareness across Victoria.
Roles and Responsibilities
Relationship Management
- Manage and grow a portfolio of 120-150 major donors, foundations and trusts, and high-capacity prospects, prioritising authentic trust-based relationships, opportunities for engagement and long-term partnership.
- Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of qualified prospects, ensuring effective portfolio segmentation and progression through the donor journey.
- Develop and execute qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for caseload management.
- Build meaningful relationships through meetings, presentations, events, and personalised touch points.
- Secure new gifts, multi-year commitments, and increased revenue across the caseload.
- Identify, qualify and convert new partnership opportunities aligned with organisational priorities or effectively handover to another team member.
- Maintain accurate relationship plans, pipeline activity, donor records and forecasts within Salesforce.
- Collaborate with Marketing & Communications and Global teams to develop funding proposals, impact reports and supporter communications.
Revenue Growth & Strategy
- Contribute to the development and execution of annual fundraising strategies and revenue goals. Provide accurate forecasting and pipeline management.
- Analyse caseload performance and implement strategies to maximise retention, acquisition and revenue growth.
- Build and maintain a sustainable pipeline of qualified major donor, foundation and trust opportunities. Generate leads for corporate and church partnerships and collaborate with relevant team members for these referrals.
- Work closely with the Church Engagement team and support existing and new church partnerships as needed.
- Identify emerging opportunities, trends and networks that support long-term fundraising growth.
- Collaborate across teams to leverage campaigns, events and engagement opportunities.
Regional Leadership
- Lead the growth of IJM Australia’s fundraising and brand awareness across Victoria.
- Serve as IJM Australia’s senior fundraising representative within the region.
- Provide leadership and support through matrix relationships, helping to strengthen fundraising capability and stakeholder engagement across the region.
- Build awareness, credibility and influence among philanthropists, business leaders, churches, foundations and community stakeholders.
- Develop and implement regional growth strategies that support fundraising, awareness and long-term organisational objectives.
- Represent IJM at conferences, supporter events, church gatherings, networking opportunities and speaking engagements.
- Model IJM’s values and leadership behaviours of Professional, Christian and Bridge-Building.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate across Partnerships, Marketing & Communications, Finance, Business Intelligence, Operations and Global teams to achieve organisational goals.
- Contribute to national fundraising campaigns, events and strategic initiatives.
Supervisory: This role reports to the Chief Partnerships Officer.
Essential qualifications & experience
- Strong interest in the work of anti-slavery and international development.
- Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in philanthropy, fundraising, partnerships, business development, relationship management, sales, account management or comparable revenue-generating roles.
- Demonstrated success managing major donors, foundations and trusts, or strategic stakeholder relationships that achieve revenue targets.
- Demonstrated success securing and stewarding significant philanthropic gifts, including five and six-figure donations.
- Experience developing fundraising budgets, pipelines, managing donor portfolios and forecasting revenue performance.
- Proven ability to develop and execute successful qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
- Excellent communication, presentation, networking and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational, planning and project management capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and drive outcomes in a growth-oriented environment.
- Ability to travel regularly throughout Victoria and periodically to Tasmania, South Australia and other Australian locations as required. Travel to IJM’s Sydney office will be required at least four times a year.
- Ability to champion IJM’s core values of Professional, Christian and Bridge-Building.
Desirable qualifications & experience
- Experience within the not-for-profit, faith-based, or international development sectors.
- Knowledge of the Australian philanthropic landscape.
- Experience using CRM systems, preferably Salesforce.
- Experience establishing, launching or expanding fundraising activities within a new market, region or growth environment.
