Who we are

Employment Hero is on a mission to make employment easier and more valuable for everyone. Our Employment Operating System brings hiring, HR, payroll and benefits into an all-in-one solution.

Since our inception in 2014, we’ve scaled to a $2 billion valuation and gained a presence in 6 countries globally – Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and Canada. We now service over 350,000 businesses and more than 3 million employees.

The EH Way

At Employment Hero, we’re proud of our unique DNA, which we call The EH Way.

  1. We are Mission First – Our Mission determines what we work on, where we invest, and where we focus. Every decision runs through a single filter: does this accelerate our Mission?
  2. We are Remote First – we champion a remote environment with a preference for asynchronous communication and a high degree of autonomy
  3. We are AI First – we are committed to using AI to accelerate our mission; AI is not just a tool, it’s a fundamental part of how we operate, innovate, and scale
  4. We Live by Our Values – we role model our values 100% of the time
  5. We Expect High Performance – we set a high standard and we’re not satisfied with being average

This role

We’re a fast-growing global HR software business with engineering teams spanning Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Vietnam. As we scale, so does the complexity of our internal operations — and we need someone to lead the engineering effort that powers it.

This is a newly created Group Engineering Manager role for Operations Engineering: a dedicated function that automates workflows, builds internal tooling, and harnesses AI to help teams across Finance, Legal, People, and beyond do more with less.

Strategic direction comes from two Head of Operations Engineering roles, each owning a set of internal business areas, priorities, and stakeholder relationships. Your role is the engineering counterpart: turning that direction into strong, reliable delivery. Each squad is aligned to a business domain, with an embedded Product Owner gathering requirements and managing stakeholders day-to-day; your engineers own technical approach, build quality, and delivery, and you own the group’s overall execution health.

Squads operate with autonomy within a shared engineering culture — you set the engineering standards, ensuring every squad has the right people, technical direction, and conditions to deliver well, with nothing falling through the cracks between strategy and execution. For cross-cutting needs like infrastructure, shared architecture, or AI implementation, you’ll partner with peer Group EMs in Architecture and AI. You are the primary point of engineering accountability for Operations Engineering as a whole.

You will

Lead and grow Operations Engineering

  • Own the overall health, performance, and direction of the Operations Engineering group — comprising multiple squads aligned to internal business domains.
  • Hire, develop, and retain strong engineering talent; build a culture of craft, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Coach and support Engineering Managers and Engineering Leads within your group, ensuring they have clarity on goals, honest feedback, and a path to grow.
  • Set the bar for engineering quality, delivery practices, and team ways of working across all squads.

Drive AI and automation delivery

  • Champion the use of AI, workflow automation, and modern tooling as first-class solutions to internal business problems.
  • Work with Product Owners and internal stakeholders to identify high-value automation opportunities and ensure your squads have the technical strategies to execute on them.
  • Stay close to emerging AI capabilities and help the group apply them pragmatically — building internal systems, integrating third-party tools, and iterating quickly.
  • Set engineering standards for how automation and AI-built systems are designed, tested, and maintained sustainably over time

Manage stakeholders with clarity and credibility

  • Work closely with the two Head of Operations Engineering roles as your primary strategic partners — they set direction and own business area priorities; you own engineering execution against that direction.
  • Build a strong working rhythm with both Heads: understand their roadmaps, surface engineering constraints early, and give them confidence that commitments will be met.
  • Engage with Product Owners embedded in Finance, Legal, People, and other internal functions — acting as the senior engineering point of contact when delivery, scope, or technical trade-offs need to be resolved.
  • Partner closely with peer Group Engineering Managers — particularly in Platform & Enablement, Architecture, and AI — when your squads have infrastructure, integration, architectural, or AI practice dependencies.
  • Represent Operations Engineering at the leadership level: contribute to engineering-wide planning, surface risks early, and advocate for your group’s needs and priorities.

Ensure operational excellence

  • Maintain oversight of delivery across all squads: understand what is being built, identify blockers early, and hold the group accountable to commitments.
  • Define and track the right metrics for Operations Engineering — delivery health, automation impact, stakeholder satisfaction — and use them to drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure squads build with appropriate security, reliability, and maintainability standards, even when the customer is internal.
  • Own the operational runbook for your group: on-call, incident response, and support coverage for the systems your squads build and maintain.

Who you are

To thrive at Employment Hero, you’ll need to embody The EH Way – operating with focus, agility, and an obsession with impact. For this role, you’ll also bring

  • Significant experience leading engineering teams — ideally multiple squads or a group — in a fast-paced, product-driven environment.
  • A genuine track record of delivering automation, internal tooling, or AI-augmented systems that created measurable business value.
  • The ability to take strategic direction from senior stakeholders and translate it into clear engineering outcomes — without needing to own the strategy yourself.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills: you can build trusted relationships with senior leaders, surface engineering constraints clearly, and hold your ground on delivery quality without being obstructive.
  • Experience hiring and developing engineers, with a genuine investment in the growth of the people in your team.
  • The ability to hold technical depth and people leadership simultaneously — you know when to go hands-on and when to delegate.
  • Comfort navigating a complex, multi-team organisation with dependencies across functions and geographies.

It will also be advantageous if you have

  • Experience in HR tech, fintech, or enterprise SaaS businesses with internal operational complexity.
  • Hands-on background in workflow automation platforms, LLM integration, or agentic AI systems.
  • Prior experience as a Group Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, or equivalent multi-team leadership role.
