Learning Support Advisor

We have an exciting opportunity for a Learning Support Advisor to be part of our team at Victoria University (VU) at our Sydney campus. 

VU has partnered with the Education Centre of Australia since 2007, to deliver courses in Sydney. VU Sydney offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of Business, IT and Early Childhood to primarily international students.

Position Summary

The Learning Support Advisor supports student engagement, progression and academic success by providing proactive, student-centred learning assistance under the direction of the Learning Support Coordinator. The position designs, delivers and evaluates learning skills workshops and resources, provides individual and group support, assists students with study planning and assessment preparation, and contributes to early intervention strategies for students at risk. The role also monitors student progress, maintains accurate and confidential records, refers students to appropriate university services, and works collaboratively with academic and professional staff to continuously improve student support outcomes. It is a requirement to understand how universities operate including the application of policies and procedures and a sound appreciation of the international student experience.

Key Responsibilities:

The major responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

  • Providing high quality academic and learning skills support to students
  • Identifying students ‘at-risk’ for early academic intervention
  • Implementing strategies for learning skills support according to established and continuous improvement in quality standards
  • Providing research skills to students and staff
  • Creating and presenting workshops supporting study skills
  • Ensuring students are engaged with learning processes and supporting academic staff in the pursuit of excellence in student achievement
  • Maintaining records and reporting on students’ academic progress.

As the successful candidate you will ideally have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Education, Teaching, Academic Literacies or a related disciplinary field.
  • Demonstrated experience in higher education in a role specifically related to providing learning support and academic literacies development to an international student cohort
  • Strong evidence of a commitment to student-centred learning, and experience in the pastoral care of international students
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact productively with students and staff from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated reporting and data compilation skills, preferably with a proficient level in using Microsoft Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, promote, facilitate, monitor and evaluate learning programs or events.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Library support and research skills will be highly desirable.

Candidates with TESOL will be highly regarded.
