Salary: Full-time: $75,000 – 85,000, Casual: $37-43/hr + super (Based onexperience)

Venue: The Concourse Performing Arts Centre, Chatswood

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re seeking Mechanists and Fly Operators to support our production team across a variety of events. This is a hands-on technical role with opportunities to operate, program, and design for theatre productions, live music, and other events.

You’ll work collaboratively with production teams, artists, and venue staff to ensure smooth, professional, and visually exciting outcomes for every show.

ABOUT THE VENUE

The Concourse is a state-of-the-art hub for culture, entertainment, information, retail, food and beverage, opened in Chatswood in September 2011.

Century Venues operate as the Managers of The Concourse, responsible for the Concert Hall, the Theatre and The Lounge.


FLY SYSTEM:

The Concourse Theatre and Concert Hall are fitted with a state of the art powered winch line fly system. The flybars operate on a powered winch system and are controlled by a Waagner Biro CAT System.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

This is a client facing role where you need to demonstrate professionalism and support to our clients hiring the venue. Working under the direction of the Production Manager, the Stage Mechanist/Fly Operator has the following responsibilities:

  1. Carr out preventative and ad-hock maintenance across the site in line with our preventative maintenance schedule.
  2. Deliver technical operations for performances and events held at The Concourse. Ensuring the highest quality for our customers and stakeholders.
  3. Delivery of technical aspects relating to your department as well as working within and alongside other members of the technical team to deliver all aspects of production relating to events. Consult and advise technical management during the planning stages as required.
  4. Maintain, prepare and collate equipment required for upcoming events including technical equipment, furniture and consumables, in line with established preventative maintenance schedules.
  5. Ensure compliance with current WHS legislation, venue policy and procedures, Risk Assessments, Safe Work Method Statements and current industry standards.
  6. Operate technical equipment within your department at a high professional level, and be willing to work and operate across all departments as required.
  7. Be highly flexible in hours of work, committed to a rotating shift basis available 7 days a week.
  8. Provide feedback to the Technical Manager with regards improving processes, increasing efficiency, and reliability within the technical department in order to better achieve outcomes for Century Venues and our clients.

 

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 2 years experience in the similar role within performing arts, theatre, production company or related industry including:

  • Operating theatrical fly towers (rope or automated)
  • Basic or higher Riggers Ticket
  • Working Safely at Heights Competency
  • Strong staging practices such as rigging scenery using engineered rigging systems, moving soft materials (e.g. drapes, cycloramas, scrims), following staging plans and mark-ups
  • Stage management skills such as calling show cues, operating basic AV equipment as required.
  • General understanding of all technical disciplines and ability to coordinate departments during bump ins, outs and technical rehearsals.
  • Create, modify, interpret and communicate production documentation including risk assessments and WHS policy and procedures.

Respond to emergency situations calmly and efficiently. Directing crew and clients through necessary steps as outlined in procedure documentation

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Competent Testing and tagging (AS/NZS 3760)
  • Construction Industry Induction (White Card)
  • Elevated Work Platform Ticket (Yellow Card)
  • Experience with I.T. infrastructure, switching, and network management.
  • AutoCAD or similar experience
  • Strong interest/experience in another discipline such as audio, lighting or video systems.
  • Ability to read music for the purpose of cue-calling.
