At Australian Mentoring Services (AMS), we do things a little differently.

You might know this role as a Support Worker, but at AMS we call our people Mentors — because we believe the role is about so much more than providing support.

It’s about empowering people, building confidence, developing skills, creating opportunities and helping someone live a life worth living.

We’re currently looking for Permanent Part-Time Mentors to join our team across Liverpool, Fairfield and Roselands, supporting participants with psychosocial disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

What does being a Mentor mean?

Being a Mentor is about getting to know the person, understanding what matters to them and supporting them to work towards their own goals.

Some days might involve helping someone develop their cooking, budgeting or household skills. Other days could be getting out into the community, supporting someone to reconnect with family or culture, building social connections, attending appointments or simply being there when someone needs a little encouragement.

You’re not there to do everything for someone — you’re there to help them discover what they can do.

And sometimes, the biggest wins are the little ones.

We’re not looking for bums on seats.

We’re looking for people who genuinely want to make a difference in someone’s life.

You’ll need to be someone who:

• Builds genuine, respectful relationships
• Is patient, empathetic and non-judgemental
• Can see the person, not just the disability
• Celebrates the small wins
• Is comfortable working with people who may have complex needs or behaviours
• Can encourage independence while providing the right level of support
• Is reliable, resilient and able to think on your feet
• Wants to learn and grow alongside the people you support

Previous experience in disability, mental health, psychosocial support, youth work, community services or a similar environment is highly regarded.

But just as important to us is who you are and why you want to do this work.

What you’ll be doing

As a Mentor, you will support participants in their homes and in the community to:

• Develop daily living and independent living skills
• Build confidence and work towards personal goals
• Develop social connections and participate in the community
• Access education, employment and other opportunities
• Develop cooking, cleaning, meal planning and budgeting skills
• Build positive routines and healthy relationships
• Work towards greater independence and self-determination
• Implement Individual Support Plans and Behaviour Support Plans
• Provide a safe, respectful and empowering environment

You’ll work both independently and as part of a team, always respecting the rights, choices and goals of the people we support.

• Valid NSW Driver’s Licence P2 or Full Licence
• NDIS Worker Check
• NSW Working with Children Check
• Ability to work within a rotating roster, including some evenings, weekends and overnight shifts
• A genuine commitment to supporting people to achieve their goals
