Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and we strive to create a supportive, inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued, regardless of their background.

We are proud of our longstanding partnership with the Onward Lives Charity, which reflects our values and passion for making a meaningful impact. This collaboration goes beyond financial support; it shapes how we operate daily, from reducing food waste to improving employability opportunities and supporting reintegration into society.

The Role:

We are looking for an experienced and reliable Ferrous Checker to join our team at our Basildon site.

You will be responsible for checking, identifying and grading incoming and processed ferrous scrap metal, ensuring materials meet the required quality standards. The role involves identifying contamination, accurately recording material grades and supporting the safe and efficient running of our busy recycling yard.

This is an exciting opportunity to join us during a period of significant change and be part of the next chapter in this well-established recycling business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and grade incoming and processed ferrous scrap metal to ensure materials meet the required quality standards.
  • Identify different grades of scrap, including Plate & Structural, Heavy Melting Steel (HMS 1&2), Cast Iron, Turnings and Shredded Feed.
  • Check loads for contamination, including non-ferrous metals and other unsuitable materials.
  • Identify and report potentially hazardous items, such as sealed cylinders, flammable tanks and oil-containing equipment.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment to support accurate identification and grading of materials.
  • Accurately record material grades, weights and inspection details using yard management or weighbridge systems.
  • Ensure materials are correctly graded to support accurate pricing and stock control.
  • Work closely with yard operatives, weighbridge staff and management to maintain smooth day-to-day operations.
  • Follow site procedures and ensure compliance with relevant environmental and health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Previous experience working in a scrap metal yard, recycling facility, foundry or similar environment.
  • Good working knowledge of ferrous scrap metal grades and specifications.
  • Experience identifying different types of iron and steel scrap.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to spot contamination and incorrectly graded or mixed loads.
  • A good understanding of health and safety requirements within a busy yard environment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
  • A reliable, hardworking and practical approach to work.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative when required.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • A flexible attitude and willingness to support the wider yard team when needed.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.

Health, safety and wellbeing are our priority and, as such, all roles are subject to pre-employment and post-employment drug testing.
