The Role

As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you’ll build and improve the systems behind our Employment Operating System, delivering reliable solutions that make a difference for millions of users.

We’re looking for someone with solid backend expertise, a problem-solving mindset and a passion for building great products, who’s ready to take ownership and grow in an AI-first engineering environment.

What you’ll do:

• Own product problems end-to-end, from understanding requirements and designing solutions to development, testing and production deployment.
• Build and maintain reliable backend services, RESTful APIs and integrations.
• Solve technical challenges, improve application performance and deliver practical, maintainable solutions.
• Leverage AI coding agents to accelerate development while maintaining code quality.
• Make thoughtful technical decisions, applying sound engineering practices and seeking input when tackling unfamiliar challenges.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams, contribute to technical discussions and continuously improve your skills.

What We’re Looking For

• Solid software engineering experience, typically 5+ years, with proven backend development experience in production environments.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language, such as Ruby, Python, Java, PHP or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Solid fundamentals in RESTful APIs, databases, automated testing and software engineering best practices.
• Good problem-solving skills and product thinking, with the ability to independently deliver well-defined solutions and seek guidance when needed.
• An AI-first mindset, with experience or a strong willingness to use AI coding agents to improve software delivery.
• Good English communication skills, a proactive approach and the ability to thrive in a global, remote-first team.

We primarily build our applications using Ruby. Ruby experience isn’t required, and we’ll support you in developing the necessary skills when you join. You’ll also have opportunities to expand your expertise across the full stack.
