Summary:
We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Design Engineer to join our fast-growing engineering team. This role will be central to the layout design and physical integration of our plasma-based reactor modules and supporting systems. You’ll be working on tangible industrial hardware – from concept through to testable prototypes – with opportunities to contribute directly to Australia’s clean tech frontier.
You’ll be part of a lean, high-agency team scaling our prototype system into solutions fit for field deployment. We value speed, practicality, and clarity – if you enjoy designing for the real world, iterating efficiently, and seeing your work come to life on the workshop floor, this is your kind of role.
Responsibilities:
- Translate system requirements into clear and practical layout designs, including module structures, enclosures, and component arrangements.
- Create and maintain detailed design models using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
- Produce efficient design iterations to support agile prototyping and testing workflows.
- Ensure documentation of technical drawings, part specifications, and change management is maintained to support traceability and handover.
- Work closely within an interdisciplinary team to ensure functional integration from concept to assembly.
- Apply design-for-manufacture (DFM) thinking from the early stages, taking into account mechanical principles and fabrication methods.
- Follow safe work practices and contribute to maintaining a well-managed workspace aligned with WHS guidelines.
Required skills/qualifications:
- A degree in related technical discipline (e.g. Engineering, Industrial Design, Drafting/Engineering Design)
- Proven track record in design engineering, having developed products comprising mechanical, electronics, plumbing, electrical, and control systems and components.
- Proficiency in CAD tools and an understanding of how to design for desired specifications, such as performance, durability, manufacturability, etc..
- Strong communication and documentation habits.
- A proactive mindset and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, hands-on engineering environment.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe, organised, and compliant working environment in line with WHS expectations.
Preferred Skills / Experience (not essential) :
- A good understanding of solid foundational understanding across chemistry, & physics.
- Familiarity with engineering simulations (e.g., thermal, mechanical, fluid flow).
- Practical understanding of small-scale manufacturing tolling & equipment (e.g., how machinery like 3D printer, CNCs, mills) to design components that are easy to manufacture or assemble in-house.
- Familiarity with P&IDs and PFDs.
- General understanding of electronic hardware design to support system integration and design spacing.
