Murri Watch Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation is a not-for-profit organisation incorporated under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (‘the CATSI Act’).

Murri Watch is dedicated to:

• Reducing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths and self-harm in custody by promoting the physical, cultural, economic, and social well-being of our community.

• Leading in culturally proficient and community-sensitive services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals vulnerable to contact with the police, affected by public drunkenness, watch-house detention, youth detention, homelessness, or at risk of homelessness.

• Ensuring continuity of care through specialised skills in engagement, assessment, creative interventions, and navigating human services support systems.

Murri Watch was initially established in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. We continue our commitment to reducing the over-representation of First Nations people in the criminal justice system and to supporting people who are homeless, rough sleeping and transitioning to stable housing.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

An opportunity exists for a Frontline Support Worker/Cook at Murri Watch.

The Frontline Support Worker provides immediate assistance and support to individuals in crisis or facing difficult situations, ensuring their safety, well-being, and access to necessary resources. This role involves direct interaction with clients, conducting needs assessments, offering emotional support, and coordinating with other service providers to deliver comprehensive care.

The key responsibilities of a Frontline Support Worker/Cook are to:

• Plan and implement nutritious menus for lunch and dinner.

• Order, shop for and / or arrange for delivery of food, drinks and groceries.

• Efficiently budget for the food and drink requirements of the service and adopt effective purchasing methods.

• Liaise with clients and staff on nutrition requirements and eating preferences.

• Ensure the kitchen environment and equipment is maintained with the highest regard for cleanliness and safety and does not represent an unacceptable level of risk to the health and safety of themselves, other staff, clients, visitors, contractors or the wider community.

• Make loss control/prevention a priority whilst undertaking daily tasks.

• Report any illness, injury, hazard, near miss or incidents and losses as soon as they are detected to the Manager.

• Encourage clients to respect the hostel’s property.

• Ensure knowledge of / understanding for the Food Safety Act and food handling requirements.

• Develop an understanding of the Fire Safety Plan, participate in review when required, and assist in the development of strategies and actions to ensure compliance.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the cultural issues, barriers, and solutions to improving the quality of life of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society.

• Ability to communicate orally and in a writing style appropriate to the intended audience including communicating effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

• Highly developed interpersonal skills including conflict resolution, liaising negotiating outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and networking including a sound knowledge of community, government, and non-government service providers

• Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

• Trade qualification in Commercial cooking, current Food Handler Certificate or willing to obtain one.

• Proven experience with volume cooking such as hotels, healthcare and/or similar environments

• Ability to lead day-to-day production and accept responsibility for the smooth running of the kitchen

• Solid stock control, menu costing, rostering and team management skills

• Responsible for WH&S for the food operations, kitchen & associated area & team members

• Ensure compliance with all aspects of the Food Licence and all laws, regulations and codes relating to food handling, storage, cooking and service
