About Allume

We’re empowering millions of people to access clean, affordable energy.

We’re a Melbourne-based technology company, and our world-first technology, SolShare, unlocks rooftop solar for apartment residents. This smart hardware connects a single rooftop solar system to multiple units and common areas, fairly distributing solar energy so everyone gets their fair share. SolShare helps reduce both energy bills and carbon emissions.

SolShare removes the technical and ownership barriers that have long prevented apartment households from accessing rooftop solar. We built it here in Melbourne, and it’s now connected over 13,000 apartments across Australia, the UK and the US. We’re doubling our installation base each year, and we’re aiming to connect over 100,000 apartments by 2029. SolShare now also brings shared battery optimisation to apartment buildings.

We’re growing quickly, and our technology is becoming more capable as we scale. That means we need great people to help us build what comes next.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion

Allume is an endorsed employer for women by WORK180, and you can find a full list of our benefits and policies here: https://work180.com/en-au/for-women/employer/allume-energy

  • Leave and Half-Day Fridays: 25 days (5 weeks) of annual leave, plus a ‘Half-Day Friday’ every fortnight when the whole team logs off at lunch.
  • Progressive parental leave: 15 weeks paid leave for primary carers and 5 weeks for secondary carers, with no minimum tenure.
  • Wellbeing: Free, confidential counselling and support through our Employee Assistance Program.
  • Options: Share options through our Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP).

About the role

Our SolShare technology brings together mechanical, electronics, firmware, cloud software and electrical engineering. We design, build and maintain the smart hardware and software that make rooftop solar work for apartment buildings across Australia, the UK and the US.

Reporting to our Head of Systems & Integration in the product development team, you’ll play a key technical role in making sure our products work well together, are reliable and do what apartment residents and installers need. You’ll turn stakeholder needs into clear requirements, guide design integration and risk analysis across disciplines, then lead the verification and validation (V&V) that proves our products perform in the field for apartment residents, installers and other stakeholders.

This role suits a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving practical problems, making risk-based trade-offs and working across engineering disciplines – and seeing your work help apartment residents access clean, affordable energy. You’ll be part of a collaborative team and contribute throughout the product development lifecycle.

What you’ll do

  • Requirements & interface mapping: Translate stakeholder needs into clear functional system requirements, system and interface control documents, and technical feasibility analyses across Allume’s product suite.
  • Cross-disciplinary technical integration: Facilitate design decisions across the product team by implementing system requirements, evaluating technical risks, and ensuring testability across product development disciplines.
  • Risk & reliability engineering: Lead hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), FMEA/FMECA and reliability activities – from accelerated life testing to field performance analysis and root-cause investigations.
  • Verification & validation execution: Design system test strategies, author V&V protocols, and lead hands-on execution of lab and system-level testing, including verification of firmware and software releases before they reach the field.
  • Compliance & technical documentation: Support regulatory compliance testing and maintain system-level technical documentation (e.g. Technical Construction Files, System Architecture Design documents).
  • Estimating & planning: Contribute to task estimation, planning and coordination of systems integration and verification and validation activities.
  • Product development process: Maintain fit-for-purpose documentation standards and practices across the product development cycle, ensuring processes between disciplines are consistent and compatible.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need to have worked in solar or energy before, and you don’t need to tick every box. What matters most is that the role excites you.

You’ll have:

  • Solid practical product development experience working across hardware and software, with hands-on engineering experience in embedded/firmware, mechatronics, systems, electronics, or another related field.
  • A structured foundation in V&V principles and risk methodologies (e.g., FMEA, root-cause analysis), knowledge of or experience with safety standards and compliance.
  • Demonstrated self-direction in evolving environments, balancing calculated technical assumptions with delivery milestones.
  • Sound engineering judgment – you check results from simulation, analysis and AI tools against real-world constraints before relying on them.
  • Clear technical communication and collaborative skills to ask insightful questions and build alignment across teams.

Nice to have

It’d be great if you also have experience with:

  • Electrical or power systems, such as battery storage, inverters, EV charging or energy metering.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing or automating test systems.
  • Supporting product certification and conformity assessment for markets such as Australia, the UK and the EU (e.g. RCM, UKCA, CE).
  • Systems engineering frameworks (e.g. ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288) or functional safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508).

Right to work

You’ll need valid, unrestricted work rights in Australia. We can’t offer visa sponsorship.

Interview process

We aim to respond within two weeks, and the full process usually takes four to six weeks. There are three stages:

  • Round 1: Online interview (15 minutes) – a short conversation about your experience, what you’re looking for and why Allume interests you.
  • Round 2: Technical deep dive (1 hour) – an in-person discussion with the hiring manager to explore your technical expertise and how you tackle role-specific challenges.
  • Round 3: Values and team alignment (1.5 hours) – a final conversation with the hiring manager and the wider team, so both sides can work out whether Allume is the right fit.

Company Overview

Allume’s vision is a world where everyone can access clean and affordable energy from the sun. We believe everyone deserves the power to reduce their electricity bill and carbon footprint. For too long residents in multi-tenanted buildings have been left out of the opportunity to take control of their electricity usage through rooftop solar. As a result, they have been left paying ever increasing electricity rates. We did not think this was fair, so we built the SolShare to level the playing field, giving everyone the ability to obtain free solar power for their home.
