Purpose of Role

The Project Officer Yarn’n Strong supports ADA Australia’s new Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander disability advocacy project – Yarn’n Strong, including assisting with coordinating the establishment, design and delivery of this Information, Linkages & Capacity Building (ILC) project.

The Yarn’n Strong project aims to raise awareness and understanding of rights for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people with disability and assist individuals and community to build their skills, knowledge and confidence to exercise those rights.

The Project Officer, Yarn’n Strong, will support the project team and project partners to deliver high quality, culturally appropriate activities which ensure that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people with disability, their families, carers and community, are aware of their rights and have the skills, knowledge and confidence to exercise those rights. This includes supporting the development and implementation of information, training and resources regarding disability rights and self-advocacy for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people with disability.

The Project Officer, Yarn’n Strong provides support to the project to ensure high quality, culturally responsive and safe project delivery. The Project Officer will participate in stakeholder and community engagement activities, support coordination of co-design and community consultation activities and directly support project partners in service delivery.

The role reports to and works closely with the Team Leader, Yarn’n Strong and maintains a collaborative and productive working relationship with all other staff within the organisation to achieve ADA Australia’s strategic goals.

Key Position Duties

• Support the establishment and delivery of the Yarn’n Strong ILC project.

• Identify and provide feedback on areas for improvement and contribute towards consistency of project delivery.

• Support the culturally appropriate design and delivery of the project activities, training and resources ensuring adherence to relevant cultural protocols.

• Coordinate and support stakeholder and partner activities.

• Contribute and support the project to reach all milestones, targets and KPIs.

• Project support to partner organisations and Local Community Advocates.

• Track project deliverables and targets.

• Support relationships with key stakeholders including but not limited to ILC partners, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services, NDIA, NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, Queensland Independent Disability Advocacy Network and other relevant organisations and peak bodies.

• Contribute and participate in external quality certification processes.

• Monitor quality improvement strategies and processes to support the success of the project.

• Work collaboratively to share and generate ideas and solutions.

• Participate in and contribute to Workplace, Health and Safety activities to ensure a safe work environment for clients, staff, visitors and the community.

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of all policies and procedures that support the inclusion and participation of people with disability.

• Participate in the organisation’s performance management process.

• Work collaboratively with other ADA Australia services.

Key Selection Criteria (please address the following):

• Identifies as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and be accepted by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person.

• A tertiary qualification in human / community services or equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and/or training.

• An understanding of and experience in delivering services and supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

• Experience in supporting design and development of culturally appropriate community projects.

• Strong administration and problem-solving skills to support delivery of the project.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and simple manner.

Essential Requirements:

• Current Queensland Driver’s licence.

• Current (less than three (3) years old) pre-employment National Criminal History Certificate (ongoing renewal every 3 years at employee’s expense).

• Valid NDIS Worker Screening Clearance (paid workers) at employee’s expense.

• Valid Working with Children – Blue Card (paid workers) at employee’s expense.
