Description
Job title: AI Consultant
Report to: Head of AI
Location: Remote within the UK, with regular travel to client sites and our group companies, typically four to six days a month
Hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00 (40 hours a week)
About us
Owlis is a UK IT managed services group, backed by private equity, that grows by bringing established regional IT providers together on one platform. Each business keeps its own name and its local relationships. Behind it sits one set of systems, one set of policies, and a group with the depth to support it properly. Together, we look after small and medium-sized businesses across the UK with managed IT, cybersecurity, and AI and transformation services.
About the role
Most of the businesses we look after know AI matters but don’t know where to start, and some have switched tools on without checking what data they can see. This role sits with those clients, finds where AI will save them time or reduce risk, and turns that into a practical, costed plan our engineers can deliver.
Core systems
- Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot (user and adviser level)
- Microsoft Purview and SharePoint (to review permissions and data with an engineer)
- HubSpot for client opportunities; HaloPSA for project time and tasks
What you will be doing
Client discovery and advice
- Run discovery workshops and interviews with client stakeholders
- Identify and prioritise AI and automation use cases by value, effort and risk
- Carry out AI readiness assessments using our standard templates, with an engineer for technical checks
- Produce roadmaps, recommendations and inputs for proposals (pricing set by the commercial team)
Adoption and change
- Plan and run AI adoption programmes, including training, champions and usage reviews
- Write client-facing acceptable-use guidance from our templates, for client review
- Report adoption and outcomes back to clients honestly
Working with the team
- Hand over clear, scoped requirements to the AI Engineer and Automation Engineer
- Support account managers in client reviews and opportunities in HubSpot
- Log time and tasks in HaloPSA
- Improve assessment templates, playbooks and case notes after each engagement
Risk
- Flag data protection and security risks early, and route them to the Head of AI and Compliance Manager
- Never present AI outputs or compliance positions as advice the client can rely on without review
Outcomes and KPIs
- In the first 90 days: running discovery workshops and AI readiness assessments with clients using our standard method; first client roadmaps delivered.
- By 6 months: a steady flow of AI engagements from client reviews; first Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption programmes running; contributing improvements to our assessment templates.
- By 12 months: trusted adviser on AI for a portfolio of clients across the group; engagements leading to follow-on delivery work; known internally as the person account managers bring in.
Competencies
- Clear evidence of advising external clients on technology, with discovery, recommendations and outcomes described
- Starts from the client’s goals and pain points, asks about volumes, data, people and risk, and prioritises use cases by value and effort
- Explains value to decision-makers by starting with the client’s risk or goal, using cost and impact, being honest about trade-offs and using plain English throughout
- Covers AI and data readiness, including oversharing and old permissions, sensitivity labels, data quality, licensing, acceptable-use policy and user training, and knows when to bring in an engineer
- Builds rapport in discovery, uncovers concrete use cases with rough volumes, flags data and risk issues plainly and agrees a clear next step
- Supports adoption by finding out why from users, targeting training to real tasks, using champions and usage data, and reporting honestly to the client
- Tells people early and plainly, with options, and teaches rather than does it for them
Essential skills and experience
- Has run discovery or requirements workshops with business clients and turned them into recommendations
- Understands how generative AI tools work, what they’re good at and where they fail, well enough to advise a business owner
- Has advised on Microsoft 365 or similar business platforms, including data, permissions and security basics
- Writes clear proposals, roadmaps and reports for non-technical decision-makers
- Has helped people adopt a new system or way of working, through training, communication or change support
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience in an IT managed services provider or IT consultancy serving SME clients
- Has delivered Microsoft 365 Copilot readiness or adoption work
- Process mapping or business analysis experience
- Microsoft certification such as AI-900 or MS-900, or a business analysis qualification
- Awareness of UK GDPR as it applies to AI use
- Has built simple automations or Copilot agents themselves
Development
We expect the role to grow into a senior consultant or practice lead as the AI practice scales. Training and certification needs are agreed in the first 90 days.
Our recruitment process
Our process usually has four stages:
- A short pre-screening call with our HR / Recruitment team.
- A competency interview with the Head of AI / Operation Director
- A live discovery role-play with a client scenario and a technical assessment
- A short final call with an Owlis Group executive, after which we aim to make an offer.
Any offer is conditional on two satisfactory professional references from employers named on your CV (with a work email address for each), proof of your right to work in the UK and, where required, a DBS check. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship.
Please note that this is a job advertisement rather than a full job description. The complete job description will be shared with you alongside your contract of employment.
