Work with us at Opera North

“I had an amazing experience in all the areas that make up Opera North; each is fantastically different but contributes massively in its own way. Every face has been a friendly one and I’d gladly trade going to school to be a part of the ON team!” Seth – Mount St Mary’s Catholic High School

Who we are…

We are one of the UK’s leading arts organisations, championing artistic excellence in everything we do. Proud of our northern roots, we are based in Leeds and regularly tour our award-winning work to theatres and concert halls across the north of England and further afield, including London and occasionally overseas.

We have our own venue in the Howard Assembly Room (HAR) where we support both local and international talent, offering an exciting programme of gigs, classical concerts, comedy and contemporary opera throughout the year.

Our aim is to make work that is bold, innovative and ambitious, engaging with people of all ages and inviting them to share our passion for what we do.

Music for everyone

We believe opera and music are for everyone. We work in communities to increase arts participation, and we provide free music lessons to thousands of schoolchildren each week across Yorkshire. What we do includes promoting wellbeing through a wide range of participatory activities, and we ensure our shows are accessible with relaxed, pay what you can, BSL-interpreted and audio-described performances.

Howard Opera Centre and the HAR

Our home is the Howard Opera Centre which combines a modern flexible working environment with an education studio where we invite all ages to come and make music, and a world class rehearsal facility for our orchestra, chorus and all the artists who work with us.

Our venue, the HAR is a thriving indie space in the heart of Leeds providing great music, local brews and a proper Yorkshire welcome to everyone who joins us.

Leeds as a capital of culture

Leeds is the only city in England outside of London to have a resident full time opera company, ballet and repertoire theatre as part of a diverse, collaborative and thriving cultural scene. This rich offer is complemented by fast-growing tech and creative industries. Surrounded by the stunning Yorkshire countryside, including the Dales, Moors and North Sea coastline, Leeds is a fantastic place to live and work.
