Assist Building and Maintenance is a service of Belong Blue Mountains Inc. We are committed to supporting members of our community including older people and people living with a disability and their carers. Our goal in providing home modification and maintenance services, is to enhance the safety, accessibility, functionality and comfort of our clients’ homes, ensuring they can live independently in their own home for as long as possible. We are seeking a skilled carpenter / handyperson to join our team, and make a meaningful difference in the community.
Position Summary
As an experienced Carpenter / Handyperson, you will play a vital role in providing minor and major modifications and maintenance services to our clients.
Responsibilities:
• Carry out all required minor and some major modifications to improve accessibility including installing grab rails and handrails, small to large access ramps, decking, timber and metal stairs, as well as working as part of a team on major modifications, ensuring all work is completed to a high standard
• Adhere to all safety standards, accessibility regulations and building codes
• Ensure accurate maintenance of all job-related records in accordance with service policies and procedures
• Adherence to all Belong Blue Mountains and Assist Building codes of conduct, organisational and service specific policies and procedures
• Supervising external tradespeople involved in specific jobs as required
• Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order
• Collaborate with clients and Occupational Therapists in the implementation of home modifications
• Engaging in all required and identified training and education
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment
• Provide clear and compassionate communication with clients and their families, ensuring that all modifications align with their needs and clinical recommendations
Essential Skills Qualifications and Experience
• Trade certificate in carpentry or a related field with the relevant trade licence as appropriate or equivalent experience
• Maintenance and modification experience in domestic industry/environments
• Demonstrated ability in all aspects of carpentry
• Demonstrated skill and ability in reading and preparing work drawings
• Demonstrated work experience in preparing estimates and costs
• Basic computer skills
• Proven track record in planning and maintaining basic records
• Demonstrated communication, negotiation and liaison skills
• Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously and as part of a team
• Demonstrated capacity to work as directed by management
• Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity towards older people, people with disabilities and their carers
• Current driver’s licence
• A compassionate and client-focused attitude.
Desirable
• Asbestos removal / Current safe asbestos sheet handling certificate
• Tiling skills
• Current construction Induction Certificate (Green/Blue Card)
• Awareness of Australian Access Standards
• Basic welding experience
• Demonstrated experience in bathroom renovations desirable
