From passion to purpose: Celebrating the heart of Canadian business at the Employment Hero Partner Summit

Contents
There is a unique kind of magic that happens when you put 100 people in a room who all share the same obsession: seeing Canadian small and medium businesses (SMBs) win. At the Westin Harbour Castle, the air wasn’t filled with corporate jargon—it was filled with stories. We heard about the grit it takes to scale a family business, the late nights spent navigating payroll, and the infectious energy of founders who are building the backbone of our communities.
At Employment Hero, we don’t just “serve” SMBs; we live and breathe their success. This Summit was a celebration of that warmth and human connection—a reminder that behind every platform is a person, and behind every business is a dream that deserves to thrive.
More than software: A human vision for Canada
Chase Gardner, Head of Global Partnerships, set the tone by reminding us that employment is about people, not just tasks. He grounded the day in the reality of the Canadian SMB – the struggle of disconnected tools and the high-risk nature of manual payroll.
Chase emphasized that we win through our community, not just our code, aiming to have a partner in every corner of Canada to provide local support. He shared the moving story of Terrain Group, who struggled with a mismatched platform until we paused their implementation to bring in the right human expertise through Rogue Consulting. This shift transformed a failing customer experience into a success story, proving that the right product combined with the right partner is the ultimate growth engine.

The real talk: Growth, grit and systems
We dived into the “Real Talk” during our panel discussions, where the energy remained raw and honest:
- The partner powerhouse: Isaac (Dream Legacy), Wade (Rogue) and Tara (Aegis/St Louis) sat down with Jason Wagenaar, Head of Partnerships, Canada to discuss the common mistakes growing operators make. They shared “before and after” moments where the right systems finally allowed a business to “click” into place, moving past the manual hurdles that typically break a growing operator. The discussion touched on how partners are now doing more “heavy lifting” than ever to help SMBs navigate the increasing complexity of people and operations as they look toward 2026.
- The founder’s lens: Lucas Luxton, Sales Manager led a session with Naomi (Honestly Good Chicken Fingers), Margaret (Macaloney’s Distillery) and Jamie (SteelNInk). They opened up about the “nearly broke” moments of scaling and the unexpected complications of managing a growing team.
They explored the turning point when they realized that relying on manual processes was no longer sustainable, leading them to embrace tech stacks that they now genuinely couldn’t run their businesses without. The founders shared practical advice on what must become easier or more repeatable to stay successful in 2026, grounding the tech transition in real-world necessity
Growth, together: Marketing updates with Evelyn Wiseman
When Evelyn Wiseman, our Partnership Marketing Lead, took the stage, she didn’t lead with conversion rates or lead funnels. Instead, she spoke about story and community. With
a background in theater literature and years spent building local business communities at Yelp, Evelyn’s approach to marketing is unapologetically people-first.
She reminded us that the Employment Hero ecosystem isn’t a “giant funnel”—it’s a living network of real people doing good things. At the core of her session was a deep appreciation for the partners who bring Employment Hero into their client relationships and reputations every day—a responsibility we do not take lightly.

Moving beyond transactions to true integration
Evelyn emphasized that while we are an all-in-one Employment Operating System, we know businesses don’t live in a vacuum. To support the way Canadian businesses actually work, she highlighted our commitment to seamless tech ecosystems:
- Seamless connectivity: We prioritize deep integrations with the platforms your clients already trust, including QBO, Xero, Sage, NetSuite and Microsoft Business Central.
- Reducing friction: The goal of our technology is to save time and create cleaner reporting, making the day-to-day lives of business owners easier, not more complex.
- Building trust first: Inspired by the best tech networks, our strategy is to educate and demo—creating trust long before we ever talk about a transaction.
Arlene Dickinson section

The absolute peak of the Summit’s energy came during an unforgettable dockside chat between Arlene Dickinson and our VP of Marketing, Adam Jardine. Arlene kicked off the session with a brilliant live experiment, asking everyone in the room to raise their hands as high as they could—and then, to raise them even higher.
It was a perfect metaphor for the Canadian SMB ecosystem: we have the grit, the talent and the revolutionary ideas (including some of the world’s top AI innovators), but we too often cloak our massive potential in caution, playing smaller than we need to. Arlene issued a direct challenge to our community to step into the spotlight, back ourselves completely, and stop confusing humility with invisibility.
For the leaders and advisors in the room, Arlene’s philosophy of operating “elbows up, not gloves off” felt exactly right for the economic realities of 2026. She wasn’t advocating for dirty play or ego-driven aggression, but rather for presence, conviction and standing up firmly for your business and your people.
When navigating uncertainty, she advised leaders to ground their decisions in unshakeable truth, noting that we should “never fight on principle, but fight on facts.” True growth, she argued, requires us to step out of the seductive safety of “good enough” and embrace the uncomfortable honesty needed to build a resilient, scaling organization.
Ultimately, Arlene reminded us that sustainable growth is fueled by human alignment, passion and legacy. She shared a crucial leadership metric: if you want to know the health of a company, talk to the frontline employees; if their only connection to the business is a paycheck, that culture is fragile under pressure. True scale comes from a mission-first culture where employees deeply understand the “why” behind their work.
Closing the session with a moving call to action, Arlene noted that great leaders “plant trees the shade of which they will never sit in,” leaving our partners profoundly inspired to lead with courage, communicate with purpose, and build a lasting legacy across Canada.
A community like no other
The most beautiful part of the day? The mingling. It was a joy to see partners from coast to coast sharing advice, airing grievances (which we are listening to!) and building new friendships. Whether it was Stu from IT Pilots explaining global turbulence patterns or Wade from Rogue taking calls from his self-driving car, the personalities in this room are what make this community special.

We left the Partner Summit feeling more inspired than ever. To our partners: you are our #1 priority. We don’t just want to provide you with a platform; we want to be in your corner as we solve employment for Canada, together.
Let’s keep growing together!
