About the role:
This role is part of a new collaborative research programme between Imperial Global Singapore and the National University of Singapore (NUS) within Singapore’s national PREPARE programme, focused on developing mathematical models to strengthen preparedness for future epidemic threats in Singapore. The postholder will lead the development of pathogen-agnostic transmission models for future respiratory virus threats, drawing on the literature to build model frameworks that can be rapidly adapted for emerging pathogens and used to identify key data needs and evaluate response options.
The position is based at the Imperial Global Singapore office located in the CREATE building on the NUS campus. The postholder will join a vibrant cross-faculty interdisciplinary research environment currently hosting approximately 30 researchers working across 5 major programmes. The postholder
will also have a formal attachment to the Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London. The mission of the Centre is to be an international resource and centre of excellence for research and training in the epidemiological analysis and modelling of infectious diseases. The Centre has built upon a world-leading research group in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London to undertake applied collaborative work with national and international agencies in support of policy planning and response across a wide range of emerging infectious disease threats and global health challenges.
On a day-to-day basis, the postholder will also work closely with their counterparts on this project at the Centre for Epidemic Research & Modelling (CERM) within the Saw Swee Sock School of Public Health at NUS. The mission of this Centre is to advance the science of infectious disease modelling, inform policies through innovative research, and train the next generation of modellers.
What you would be doing:
You will lead the development of the pathogen-agnostic modelling framework for respiratory virus
threats, including identifying relevant data inputs and gaps and generating and evaluating response options for putative “disease X” scenarios in Singapore and internationally. You will work with the wider team to review the prior modelling literature across a range of respiratory threats and to support the development of well-documented and portable software for the modelling framework. You will also support training and development activities with Singapore stakeholders alongside wider capacity building initiatives.
What we are looking for:
- PhD in infectious disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling, statistics, or a
related quantitative discipline.
- Strong knowledge of infectious disease modelling and epidemiological analysis, with
the ability to inform control policy and preparedness planning.
- Experience communicating technical scientific results clearly to specialist, policy, and
non-specialist audiences.
- Strong programming and collaborative working skills, ideally including experience with
R and GitHub.
What we can offer you:
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
- As a member of staff you will be entitled to leisure facilities within the CREATE building.
- Opportunity to travel to Imperial in London or conferences
- Generous annual leave entitlement of 21 days plus extra closure days between Christmas and New Year.
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture.
