Our SuperHuman: AI adoption in HR report previously revealed that AI is already being embraced by most HR leaders, with 98% of HR professionals in Singapore utilising software with some form of AI. The most common use cases of AI tools revolve around analytics, generative AI, using algorithms and machine learning to match employees to roles and to monitor compliance.

Right now, 47% of HR leaders are leaning into AI’s capabilities to identify and report on employee data trends, helping them keep on top of onboarding and retention alongside other important internal temperature gauges, such as happiness and employee absence or disengagement. HR content creation closely followed reporting (40%), followed by automating tasks with AI models (36%), monitoring compliance (36%) and summarising content (36%). In fact, almost half (49%) of business owners or ELT members (executive leadership team) said they focused their use of AI on summarising content such as top job applicants for a role.

As the AI landscape is rapidly changing, many HR leaders also feel a sense of urgency about moving forward with AI in the HR function. According to Gartner, a massive 81% of HR leaders have explored or implemented AI solutions to improve process efficiency within their organisation. 76% of HR leaders also believe that if their organisation does not adopt and implement AI solutions, such as generative AI, in the next 12 to 24 months, they will be lagging in organisational success compared to those that do.

When it comes to payroll, AI is changing the payroll industry — enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and overall management. Some of the ways AI is employed in payroll include: automated data entry, predictive analytics for workforce planning, employee benefit management, fraud detection and prevention, and so on. But how do payroll practitioners feel about it?

Our State of Payroll and Technology Report found that 100% of respondents use at least one type of software to service clients, with the most widely used software being accounting software (73%), followed by payroll software (55%), human resources software (52%), and client relationship management software (50%). It’s clear that payroll practitioners are aware of the extensive benefits technology brings, in servicing their clients and with tackling complex accounting or payroll tasks.

However, while disruptive technology is seen as essential to the success of their practice and a key enabler in improving the way they work, a high level of insecurity remains. 76% of practitioners are concerned that their job could be replaced by disruptive technology, or that it could negatively impact client relationships.

This shows that there is still a lot of insecurity and wariness surrounding the usage of technology in the industry, and more needs to be done to reframe the mindset of employees. They need to view disruptive technologies as tools that can be utilised to their benefit, and not as a threatening presence that might render them redundant.

Utilising AI for administrative efficiency

AI plays a pivotal role in automating routine administrative tasks within HR and payroll, thereby allowing teams to allocate more time for meaningful human interactions. Here are some examples of AI-driven tools:

  • Applicant tracking systems (ATS): AI-powered ATS tools streamline the recruitment process by automating tasks such as resume screening and candidate matching. It can also help to identify and mitigate unconscious bias in job descriptions and interviews. These systems use machine learning algorithms to identify the most qualified candidates based on specific criteria, saving HR professionals substantial time in the initial stages of recruitment.

Technical skills are also sought after

After soft skills, 37% of HR leaders identified programming or coding as the next most required skill. Managers were 21% more likely to cite privacy, data security or cybersecurity, while 43% of those working in mid-sized organisations also cited this as a critical skill gap. Also, 48% of HR leaders in the business servicing industry cited deep expertise in employee experience, HR and payroll as the top skill required to be AI-ready.
