About Mevo
Mevo is the world’s first climate-positive car share company, originating in Wellington, New Zealand. They are on a mission to create beautiful and livable cities by giving people an alternative to owning a personal car.
Their system is designed to be super easy to use – members can unlock cars through the Mevo smartphone app and simply pay for the time used. Mevo currently operate cars in Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton, and are aiming to grow their fleet through New Zealand and beyond.
With their current growth trajectory, Mevo is evolving fast. They knew it was time to improve the company processes to match their growth, including their HR function. That’s where Employment Hero came in.
We spoke to Imran Khan, North Island Regional Manager at Mevo, about their experience with Employment Hero and how it became a critical support in their growth ambitions.
The challenge…
In the early days of changing from a small start-up, Mevo’s HR function was limited. They had to outsource their HR needs in order to manage all the different elements that come with a growing company. While it freed up time for an already stretched team, this choice had some drawbacks.
As Imran says, they found outsourcing didn’t quite work for Mevo. Many of the employees preferred to speak to someone in the company about any HR issues. The company also operates 24/7, with employees rostered across different shifts. This meant that when an urgent HR request came in, the pace of response wasn’t aligned with the pace of operations within Mevo.
As a tech company themselves, they knew that effective software could solve this HR headache, automating time-consuming admin and freeing up critical time. This prompted them to implement Employment Hero’s HR software.
Solutions…
Streamlined recruiting
A fast-growing company usually means a fast-growing team of employees. For Mevo, recruitment was a huge priority, as they had to create and fill roles quickly to meet demand. Imran explained how Employment Hero’s applicant tracking system has made advertising roles really easy.
“We just create a job ad and then in one click – it’s done. Pre-screening questions are set up in the platform, and now, anyone in the team can be an administrator. I can say – can you just go put a job up – and they’re like oh, yeah – easy! It’s all done. The platform has done all the thinking for you.”
Employment Hero’s recruitment features haven’t just alleviated pressure for the present, it’s inspired confidence for the future. After all, as Mevo continues its success, speedy hiring and onboarding will continue to be important.
Luckily, Imran knows that won’t be an issue with Employment Hero.
“If we had to add another 50 staff tomorrow, I know it wouldn’t cause any strain on anyone today. We’ve got our recruitment, onboarding and training processes all set up with Employment Hero.”
Features to suit a remote-first business
Mevo is a remote-first business, with employees based all around New Zealand. As amazing as remote work can be, it can lead to certain challenges when keeping everyone up to date and united on the latest workplace developments.
Here at Employment Hero, we know how powerful a shared digital platform can be in overcoming those challenges. That’s why we’ve put emphasis on features that will support remote-first businesses, wherever their employees are.
Imran found this out for himself when using Employment Hero, particularly when he was monitoring critical information.
“There are so many little things in the platform that just help with transparency of knowledge and documentation – which is so important for us as a remote-first organisation. We have very strict health and safety protocols, so the incident register allows us to capture any near-misses, and the platform also captures certifications and qualifications – such as forklift licences, first aid certificates.”
Having shared knowledge available in one place can be useful, especially when the company is changing so quickly. Imran found the database of information available about the company in Employment Hero useful, saying, “being remote-first, I find the organisational chart really helpful, as well as the asset register to keep track of what resources are available or who’s got what.”
A valuable investment
Investing in software can be a big decision. Often HR managers or leaders need to present a business case, get buy-in across a company, and measure whether they made the right choice. If you happen to choose software that doesn’t end up suiting the company, that can be an expensive mistake.
For Imran, Employment Hero has proven to be the right choice for the business, and most importantly, a cost-efficient one. He’s already impressed by Employment Hero’s return on investment for Mevo.
“I did a return on investment calculation. If we stay at the same 50 employees that we have at the moment, we’re saving upwards of $8,000-$10,000 per year without doing anything, just from the moment I decided to streamline our HR and payroll function by choosing Employment Hero.”
