Role Type
Description
Permanent, full-time [0.7-1.0 FTE] | Start 11th January 2027
Ready to take your general practice nursing beyond one clinic? thePHO is a new, practice-first PHO, and we’re building something different across Te Manawa Taki. We’re looking for an experienced Registered Nurse to be the clinical face of thePHO for our member practices, across the Te Manawa Taki (Midland) region.
Practices are busy, and the right support at the right time makes a real difference – to programme uptake, to immunisation rates, and ultimately to the patients and whānau they care for. You’ll be the person practices know, trust and call.
About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
Reporting to the Nurse Director, with a dotted line to the Regional General Manager, you’ll be thePHO’s clinically credible point of contact for member practices across the region, and the Regional General Manager’s go-to for clinical advice.
This isn’t a desk job. You’ll be on the road, in practices and around the table with GPs, nurses, practice managers, iwi and Health New Zealand. You’ll be trusted to plan your own week, and practices will rely on you to get things done.
What you’ll be doing | Ngā mahi matua
No two days are the same. Here’s the flavour:
- Be the go-to clinical contact for our practices and the Regional General Manager, visiting practices regularly in person and online
- Help practices understand, set up and deliver thePHO programmes – from eligibility and claiming to PMS templates and recalls
- Provide practical immunisation support, including AIR, recall, outreach and cold chain, with a focus on tamariki Māori and Pacific tamariki
- Support quality improvement and Foundation Standard preparation, using practice and population data
- Grow the nursing workforce through SFYP, preceptors, the Workforce Development Hub and career pathways
- Help resolve clinical issues and concerns, and escalate patient safety concerns promptly
- Turn what practices tell you into change, and close the loop with them
What you’ll need | Ngā mea me whai koe
This is the non-negotiable bit – you’ll need all of these to be considered:
- Registration as a Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate from Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa | Nursing Council of New Zealand
- At least five years’ experience in New Zealand general practice or primary care
- A strong working knowledge of how general practice runs – claiming, recalls and practice management systems such as Medtech and Indici
- Experience in practice support, quality improvement, clinical education or clinical leadership
- A good understanding of the National Immunisation Schedule, recall and outreach processes, and the Aotearoa Immunisation Register
- Working knowledge of the Foundation Standard, clinical governance and escalation pathways
- Sound clinical judgement, and the ability to explain clinical issues clearly to non-clinical managers
- Credibility with GPs, nurses and practice managers, and confidence using practice and population data to find improvement opportunities
- Energy, drive and a strong work ethic – you enjoy being busy and making things happen
- A genuine commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity, and confidence working with whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori providers, including at hui
- A full New Zealand driver’s licence and readiness to travel regularly across Te Manawa Taki
- Legal right to work in New Zealand
No exceptions on these – if you’re missing one, we’d love to see you apply for something else down the track.
Nice to have | He painga anō
None of these are required, but they’ll get you noticed:
- A postgraduate qualification in nursing, primary health care, quality improvement or a related field
- Current authorised vaccinator status, or equivalent immunisation training
- Current or previous experience as a cold chain assessor
- Practical experience with the RNZCGP Cornerstone programme, including the Equity module
- Experience working with PHOs, Health NZ, IMPBs or regional health alliances
