Our Region and Communities

Roper Gulf Regional Council covers 201,000 square kilometres of the Northern Territory, an area larger than many countries, stretching from just outside Katherine to the Gulf coast.

Our five wards are home to vibrant, diverse communities:

  • Nyirranggulung Ward — Barunga, Wugularr, Manyallaluk and Bulman/Weemol
  • Never Never Ward — Mataranka, Jilkminggan, Larrimah, Daly Waters and Minyerri
  • Yugul Mangi Ward — Ngukurr and Urapunga
  • Numbulwar Numburindi Ward — Numbulwar
  • South West Gulf Ward — Borroloola and Robinson River

Council services are delivered from our support centre in Katherine and offices in each community. Many of our roles are community-based, offering a rare opportunity to work on country alongside Traditional Owners and local families.

How We Recruit

We recruit on merit. Every application is assessed against the requirements of the position, and shortlisted candidates are usually interviewed by a selection panel.

Depending on the role, successful candidates may need to complete pre-employment checks before starting, including a National Police Check and a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card). We’ll guide you through these steps, you don’t need them in hand to apply.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply. We value local knowledge, language skills and community connections, and we support local employment in the communities we serve.

Questions about a role or the application process? Contact our recruitment team at [recruitment email] or (08) 8972 9000.

Life in the Roper Gulf Region

Waterfalls, hot springs, ancient rivers and some of the best fishing in Australia, the Roper Gulf region offers a lifestyle you won’t find anywhere else. Katherine, our administrative hub, is a regional centre of around 10,000 people with schools, health services, sport and a strong community spirit, just three hours from Darwin.

For those taking up community-based roles, life on country offers something rarer still: deep connection, real responsibility, and the kind of work stories most people never get to tell.
