The extension of the Heightened Safety Period (HSP) explained
The Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) annual Workplace Safety and Health Report showed that there were a total of 46 workplace deaths in 2022, the highest number reported since 2016, where there were 66 fatalities. In comparison, there were 37 in 2021, 30 in 2020, and 39 in 2019.
The top two causes of these workplace fatalities were vehicular incidents and falls from a height. According to the MOM, most of them occurred in the construction sector, and were largely due to basic safety lapses such as inadequate safety planning and control measures, and non-compliance with safety measures. The majority of the accidents also occurred in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
