Westbury Stud – Matamata, Waikato

For over 20 years, Westbury Stud has been a leader in New Zealand’s thoroughbred industry, breeding elite racehorses that perform on the global stage.

We’re looking for experienced Stud Grooms to join our Matamata team. You’ll work with quality bloodstock in a fast-paced, professional environment, perfect for someone who thrives during the breeding season and takes pride in high standards of horse care.

This is not an entry-level position — prior professional horse handling experience within a stud, breeding, performance horse or equine veterinary environment is essential.

What You’ll Be Doing

This is a hands-on role caring for broodmares, foals, weanlings and yearlings.

Key responsibilities include:

·Delivering excellent horse care across all groups of stock

·Handling horses of all ages safely and confidently

·Supporting feeding, grooming, walker exercise and paddock rotations

·Assisting with teasing, foaling and emergency call-outs

·Assisting with mare reproductive work and breeding season procedures

·Assisting with conditioning and preparation of horses for sales, inspections and breeding activities

·Completing daily records, health checks and supporting vet and farrier visits

·Monitoring horse health, performance and behaviour, and reporting concerns to senior staff

·Supporting rehabilitation and recovery programmes where required

·Working alongside veterinarians and other equine professionals to maintain horse health and welfare

·Maintaining high standards of hygiene, safety and animal welfare

About You

We’re looking for team players who bring:

·Minimum 2 years’ experience within a thoroughbred stud, breeding, performance horse or equine veterinary environment, and/or relevant equine qualifications

·Confident horse handling across mares, foals and young stock

·Knowledge of basic to intermediate equine healthcare

·Ability to guide and support less experienced staff

·A calm, patient and safety-conscious approach to horse work

·Strong communication skills and the ability to follow instructions

·Reliability, initiative and a mature, professional attitude

·Flexibility to adapt and work in a diverse, fast-paced environment

The Details

This is a full-time position with a minimum guaranteed 40 hours per week, typically worked from 7:30am–4:30pm on a ten-on, four-off roster.

Remuneration package tailored to experience, qualifications and accommodation arrangements, with total package values ranging from NZD $60,000 – $70,000 per annum.

Vacancies are available for an immediate start, or by mutually agreed arrangement.
