Project Manager – Civil Construction

PCL Contracting Ltd is a privately owned civil contracting business primarily based in Pauatahanui, Porirua with an additional yard established over the last few years in Waingawa, Wairarapa. We specialise in roading, car parks, subdivisions, drainage, asphalt, excavation and siteworks. Our motto is “Quality – We Own It”

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to join our team and help deliver high-quality civil construction projects across the lower North Island.

Based in our Wairarapa office, you will be responsible for managing projects throughout the Wairarapa, with occasional involvement across the Wellington region.

This is a hands-on role responsible for overseeing projects from start to finish, ensuring they are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.

About the role

Reporting to the Contract Manager, you will manage multiple civil construction projects and lead the people, resources and relationships required to achieve successful outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing projects to meet programme, budget, health and safety, environmental and quality requirements
  • Planning construction operations, resources, equipment, materials and manpower
  • Forward-planning workloads to minimise delays and downtime
  • Leading and supporting Foremen and Ground Crew
  • Managing daily site operations, targets, productivity and resource use
  • Identifying underperforming areas and implementing practical solutions
  • Building strong relationships with clients, councils, consultants, main contractors and subcontractors
  • Coordinating subcontractors and ensuring site inductions and safety requirements are completed
  • Monitoring project quality, non-conformances, corrective actions and close-out documentation
  • Supporting progress claims, cost management, financial reporting and budget performance
  • Completing project documentation, daily reporting, dockets, purchasing, cost allocations, permits and SWMS/JSEAs
  • Ensuring projects comply with relevant health and safety, quality, environmental and contractual requirements
  • Providing regular reporting and project updates to the Contract Manager
  • Taking a practical, hands-on approach on site when required to maintain continuity and productivity
  • Coaching of the team to ensure continual growth of our people.
  • On site management of staff performance issues working alongside Management and Human Resources where required.

About you

You will be an experienced civil construction professional with strong project management capability and the confidence to lead teams in a busy, proactive environment.

You will bring:

  • Experience managing civil construction projects from commencement to completion
  • A strong understanding of civil construction practices
  • Excellent communication, planning and organisational skills
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving and relationship-management skills
  • Experience managing project budgets, resources, programme and documentation
  • A sound understanding of workplace health and safety
  • A high-level understanding of NZS 3910 contract requirements
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • The ability to lead by example and communicate effectively with a range of people
  • A commitment to quality, accountability and continuous improvement
