Summary

This project involves reverse-engineering the engine wiring of a range of vehicles Link ECU is considering supporting with plug-and-play products.  To develop plug-and-play ECUs, all the factory ECU wiring functionality must be determined and mapped to appropriate aftermarket ECU I/O pins. This information is then used to develop a test interface board which enables initial discovery and engine tuning.

Project Brief

One of Link ECU’s core product lines are ECUs that can be directly installed into a customer vehicle with no other modifications – we refer to these as Plug-In or Plug-and-Play (PnP) ECUs. Each PnP ECU is customised to suit the factory vehicle engine loom, factory sensors and actuators. To test these features, we first design and build an adapter to convert the factory loom to a generic ECU which enables design validation and further development. The aim of this project is to design several of these adapters to suit new vehicles we have identified for future PnP ECU products.

The student will:

  • Research engine wiring diagrams for the target vehicle application
  • Determine the required ECU functionality of each pin in the engine control loom
  • Assign each pin to a suitable input or output of one of our aftermarket ECUs
  • Use PCBA CAD tools to create a wiring adapter that converts the factory wiring loom to a Link ECU
  • Assist with decoding and reverse engineering the vehicle CAN bus (if applicable)

Key Competencies and Skills Required

  • Completed two to three years of Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Proficient with PCBA Design Tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD or KiCAD.
  • Familiar with Automotive Electrical Wiring Diagrams and Electrical Schematics.
  • General understanding of Automotive control electronics (Solenoid, Relay and Motor Drives, Analog and Digital Sensors, Electronic Fuel Injection and Ignition Systems).

Additional Skills and Interests

  • Interest in aftermarket vehicle modification and tuning.
  • Electronic Assembly and Soldering Skills.
  • Understanding of CANBUS networking and messaging, including CAN reverse engineering.
