The opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Resource Management Planner/Senior Resource Management Planner to join our growing Christchurch team. This role is well suited to someone looking to continue building their planning career through hands-on involvement in a wide range of development projects.

About the role

In this role, you will work as part of our national planning team and be involved in the preparation, assessment and processing of resource consent applications across a diverse range of projects throughout New Zealand. You will work closely with senior planners, project managers, engineers, surveyors and clients, gaining exposure to all stages of the planning and development process.

You will also have opportunities to contribute to strategic planning projects, policy reviews, plan change processes, and work associated with ongoing resource management reform.

You’ll be involved in some of New Zealand’s most significant development, infrastructure, renewable energy and fast-track projects, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of planners, surveyors, engineers and project managers.

Key aspects of the role include:

• Preparing resource consent applications for a range of activities, including land use, subdivision, and regional consents.
• Supporting projects progressing under the Fast-track Approvals Act and other alternative consenting pathways.
• Providing planning advice, undertaking statutory assessments, and developing consent and approvals strategies.
• Contributing to district plan reviews, plan changes, submissions, spatial planning initiatives, and other strategic planning projects as opportunities arise.
• Assisting clients to navigate legislative and policy changes arising from resource management reform.
• Engaging with councils, clients, consultants and other stakeholders.
• Working with mana whenua and iwi authorities on engagement and cultural matters.
• Preparing high-quality planning reports, assessments and technical advice.

About you

We’re looking for an experienced planner who enjoys taking ownership of projects, building strong relationships with clients and councils, and developing practical planning solutions that help projects progress. You will bring:

• At least 5+ years’ (Senior Planner) experience in a planning consultancy, local authority, or similar environment
• A relevant planning qualification recognised by NZPI
• A sound working knowledge of the Resource Management Act and related legislation, and an understanding of the incoming resource management framework
• Experience preparing and/or assessing resource consent applications
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging with clients and project teams
• The ability to work independently while also contributing positively within a team environment
• A practical, solution‑focused approach to planning challenges
• A good understanding of spatial concepts and the ability to read engineering, surveying and architectural plans
• You must be a NZ/AUS citizen or permanent resident to eligible to apply (post study visa’s are also not relevant for this role)

While not essential, experience with Fast-track Approvals Act projects, district plan reviews, plan changes, strategic planning initiatives, and the preparation of submissions, evidence or policy assessments, would be valued.
