Role Type
Description
Join Habitat for Humanity and help support warmer, drier, healthier homes for whānau and aiga across our communities.
About the role
As Second-in-Charge (2IC) at The Garage Op Shop, you will play a key leadership role supporting the Invercargill Retail Manager while taking an active, hands-on approach to the day-to-day operation of the store and surrounding Habitat properties.
This is not a desk-based retail position. We are looking for someone who enjoys being physically active, working with their hands, solving practical problems, and leading from the front. A significant part of the role involves handling donated goods, moving furniture and appliances, assisting with building and property maintenance, conducting site inspections, and ensuring Habitat’s retail and property assets are safe, presentable, and well maintained.
Alongside these responsibilities, you will help supervise staff and volunteers, support customer service activities, coordinate operational tasks, and contribute to the success of Habitat for Humanity’s community impact work across Southland.
Key responsibilities
- Support the daily operations of The Garage Op Shop.
- Assist with achieving store sales and operational targets.
- Lead by example in providing excellent customer service.
- Support the supervision, training, and development of staff and volunteers.
- Assist with stock handling, donations processing, merchandising, and inventory control.
- Safely move, lift, transport, and organise donated goods including furniture, appliances, and building materials.
- Undertake minor building maintenance, repairs, and property upkeep within your capability and competency.
- Conduct routine inspections of Habitat retail and property sites and identify maintenance requirements.
- Coordinate contractors and assist with maintenance projects as required.
- Assist with assessing donated furniture, appliances, and building materials for quality and resale suitability.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and well-presented retail and warehouse environment.
- Complete operational administration, reporting, roster support, and documentation accurately and on time.
About you
We are looking for a practical and physically capable individual who enjoys variety, takes initiative, and is willing to roll up their sleeves to get the job done.
You will be equally comfortable supporting retail operations, leading volunteers, undertaking maintenance work, moving stock, and solving day-to-day operational challenges.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Previous experience in retail operations, warehousing, logistics, maintenance, construction, trades support, or a similar hands-on environment.
- Practical knowledge of building maintenance, property repairs, handyman work, or basic construction principles.
- Confidence using tools and undertaking minor repair and maintenance tasks safely.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate staff and volunteers.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Good organisational and administrative skills.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach to problem solving.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and workplace technology.
- A commitment to maintaining high standards of health and safety.
Why join us?
- Competitive salary package aligned with your skills and experience.
- Permanent full-time role | 40 hours per week.
- Opportunity to lead and develop staff and volunteers.
- Diverse role combining leadership, retail operations, administration, and practical maintenance work.
- Supportive and values-driven team culture.
- Ongoing learning and development opportunities.
- Make a real difference through work that supports local communities.
- Be part of a growing organisation with a strong social purpose.
- Exclusive staff discounts at our ReStores.
- Access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
- Join a team where your contribution is valued and recognised.
