Help make great events happen
Casual Venue Assistants | Te Huinga Tāngata Wairarapa Events Centre | Carterton
Great events don’t happen by themselves. They happen because people like you make sure the details are right.
Enjoy working with people, keeping busy and seeing a space come to life? Carterton District Council is looking for Casual Venue Assistants to help deliver welcoming, well-run events at Te Huinga Tāngata Wairarapa Events Centre. From getting rooms ready to helping hirers and welcoming guests, you’ll be part of the team that makes it all come together.
A hands-on role with variety
You’ll work behind the scenes and front of house to keep events running smoothly. Depending on the event, you could be:
- Setting up rooms, seating, staging and event equipment.
- Helping hirers, event organisers and guests with requests.
- Supporting sound, lighting, projectors and other meeting equipment.
- Keeping spaces clean, tidy and ready to use—including toilets, kitchens and backstage areas.
- Opening and closing the venue and helping maintain a safe, secure environment.
What you’ll bring
You’re someone who notices what needs doing, follows through and enjoys working as part of a team. You’ll bring:
- Friendly, professional customer service and clear communication.
- Physical fitness to carry out the hands-on duties of the role and a tidy, professional presentation.
- A reliable, organised approach and attention to detail.
- The ability to follow direction and stay calm when things get busy.
- A commitment to working safely and looking out for others.
This is an active role involving standing, walking, moving furniture and handling event equipment. Heavier or awkward items are moved with team assistance or suitable equipment. A current NZ driver licence, a manager’s certificate or health and safety training would be an advantage, but these are not essential.
Be part of what brings people together
You’ll contribute to events that bring people into our community, work alongside the venue team and put your practical and people skills to good use. We value respect, doing what we say we’ll do, working together and welcoming fresh ideas.
These are casual, on-call positions, with work offered as needed to support venue events.
Living in the Wairarapa and have some flexibility in your schedule? These roles could be a great fit. You’ll need to be available to work evenings and weekends, with shifts varying according to our event bookings, and have your own reliable means of getting to and from Carterton.
Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.

We’d love to hear what you’d bring to our venue team.
