Description

About the Role

We’re looking for an Engineering Field Assistant to join our Engineering team in Ngāmotu – New Plymouth.

Working alongside BTW’s experienced engineers and engineering geologists, you’ll gain practical experience across civil and geotechnical projects while developing your technical knowledge and capability.

This is a hands-on role with plenty of variety. You’ll assist with geotechnical field testing and reporting, contribute to civil engineering and project delivery, and support projects from initial investigation through to physical works. Depending on project needs, you may also work across areas such as water, civil and structural engineering, project management, contract documentation, site supervision and client liaison.

If you’re studying towards, or close to completing, a civil engineering or related qualification and are ready to put your learning into practice and gain real-world engineering experience, this could be a great next step.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the guidance of experienced BTW engineers, you’ll:

  • Undertake geotechnical field testing and assist with reporting.
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of field subcontractors, including mechanical auger and CPT investigations.
  • Provide geotechnical and geological input into projects.
  • Contribute to engineering design and project delivery as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with civil engineering work across water, civil and structural projects as workload requires.
  • Support project management, contract documentation, site supervision and client liaison.
  • Develop practical engineering solutions while gaining experience across different stages of project delivery.

About You

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. We’re looking for someone with a good foundation, genuine curiosity and a willingness to get involved and learn.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is currently studying towards, or nearing completion of, the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil) or a similar qualification, such as Engineering Geology.
  • Preferably has some work experience related to civil engineering.
  • Has some exposure to field work such as surveys, field measurements or soil testing.
  • Ideally has some knowledge of geotechnical or geological work.
  • Has some knowledge of, or exposure to, AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
  • Is comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel and developing their report-writing skills.
  • Communicates well, listens carefully and ask questions when they need to.
  • Brings good attention to detail and an appreciation of getting work completed on time.
  • Be willing to learn, think through problems and develop your engineering design knowledge and capability.

If you’re shortlisted, we’ll ask you to provide an example of a report, project, assignment or other relevant work from your study that demonstrates your technical thinking, analysis or written communication.
