Description
A New Hospital. A New Chapter. Internal Medicine Specialist, ARC Wellington
Imagine helping establish an internal medicine service in a new specialist and emergency hospital.
Imagine having the clinical challenge of complex referral medicine, colleagues who value collaboration, and the chance to help shape how a service works from its first day.
Now imagine finishing work in a city where the waterfront, native bush and a good café are all close by.
ARC Vets is opening a purpose-built emergency and specialty hospital in Wellington in late 2027. We’re looking for a Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist to join us in late 2027 or early 2028.
Why Join ARC Wellington?
Joining a new hospital is a chance to help establish its clinical culture, referral relationships and ways of working from the outset.
We envisage a two-specialist internal medicine service as ARC Wellington develops. Our aim is to build a service where internists can share cases, exchange ideas and support one another, while each has the opportunity to help shape its direction.
You’ll also be part of ARC’s wider specialist community. Our Auckland hospitals are home to four registered internal medicine specialists, as well as colleagues in diagnostic imaging, oncology, neurology, emergency and critical care, surgery and ophthalmology. You’ll be able to draw on that network for discussion, shared learning and collaboration as you establish the Wellington service.
Locally, you’ll work alongside colleagues in emergency medicine, surgery and other developing services. You’ll have the opportunity to help create the close, practical collaboration that makes a multidisciplinary hospital work well for patients.
At ARC, we want referring veterinarians to feel confident involving us in their patients’ care. That means being approachable, communicating clearly and making it easy to work together. It also means treating clients with kindness and giving patients the thoughtful, high-quality care they deserve.
About the Role
You’ll provide specialist internal medicine services within a multidisciplinary referral hospital. Your work will include consultations, diagnostic investigations, treatment planning, procedures and ongoing care for patients with complex medical conditions.
You’ll also:
- Work closely with emergency clinicians, surgeons, nurses and other specialists on shared cases
- Guide and support the nursing team in the care of your patients
- Communicate clearly with clients about options, costs and treatment plans
- Keep referring veterinarians informed and support a smooth return to their care where appropriate
- Contribute to clinical learning through case discussion, mentoring and education
- Take part in house officer training, patient safety and service improvement as the hospital develops
The medicine matters deeply to us. So does the experience of the people delivering and receiving that care.
Who We’re Looking For
You’ll have completed a residency in small animal internal medicine and hold, or be working towards, board certification in the specialty. You’ll also need to be eligible for registration with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.
You bring sound clinical judgement, curiosity and a willingness to ask for another perspective when it will help a patient. You enjoy working across disciplines and building relationships with referring vets. You communicate with care, including when cases are complicated or decisions are difficult.
Why ARC?
ARC Vets is an independent, veterinarian-owned New Zealand emergency and specialty hospital group, with two established hospitals in Auckland and our third opening in Wellington.
Our values guide how we work: we are one team, we do right by our patients, we value growth, we take ownership and we make referrals easy. We believe excellent specialist medicine depends on skilled people who share their knowledge and support one another.
At Wellington, you’ll have the opportunity to help build a new service, with an established network of specialists to learn from and collaborate with.
Why Wellington?
An international move is a big decision. The role needs to be right, and so does the life around it.
Wellington is a compact, creative city with a strong food and arts scene, a beautiful harbour and easy access to walking tracks, beaches and the outdoors. For specialists looking for a change of pace without giving up challenging clinical work, it has a great deal to offer.
We welcome applications from New Zealand and overseas. If you’re interested but still working out the timing and practicalities of a move, we’d be pleased to start a conversation.
What’s Next?
If you’d like to practise excellent internal medicine and help establish a service you’re proud of, we’d love to hear from you.
Apply now with your CV and tell us what interests you about ARC Wellington. As we can’t fit everything into a job advertisement, if you have questions about the role, get in touch by email to fiona.park@arcvets.co.nz
